Seriously, she actually said that they are not taking into account HER anecdotal evidence.

1. She's an idiot that should be shamed everywhere she goes.
Who knows how many her anti-vax crusade has hurt.

Arguing with a vaxer is like arguing with a creationist or a birther.

11. I've always been hesitant on alternative autism treatments
Edited on Fri Jan-08-10 07:10 PM by liberal_at_heart
My son is autistic. He had ABA treatment for about a year through the public school but then the district dropped the program. He improved alot with the ABA treatment and even improved alot through the special education program at his school. I was skeptical of the the autism diets and supplements because they hadn't been through clinical trials. I am not against all alternative medicine. I believe that clinical trials have proven that things like acupuncuture, yoga, nutrition, meditation and other alternative treatments do work, not on autism but they do work. There was no evidence that autism diets or supplements worked so I didn't try any of them. My son hasn't had any flu shots though. I'm not against vaccinations but the Supreme Court has awarded one family damages stating that a vaccination shot had made a nine year old's autism worse, so I have to admit there is a twinge of fear there.

15. Here is the link
I heard it on the news when the story broke. I thought the story was saying that the child's autism got worse after receiving a shot at 9 yrs old. The ruling happened when the child was 9 yrs old. The court ruled that the shots she received when she was 19 months old aggrevated an underlying biological condition and that she developed autism.

22. This case was very narrow in scope and specifically addressed that vaccines are safe and do not caus...
autism.

a preponderance of scientific evidence gathered by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies and Institute of Medicine reports has cleared vaccines and the mercury-containing vaccine preservative thimerosal of autism involvement

and

"The bottom line is that the court decision is not germane to any but a very few American children. The best summary is, there are a few unanswered questions but this doesn't change the need to vaccinate,"

and lastly

CDC Director Julie L. Gerberding, MD, MPH, said, "Let me be very clear that the government has made absolutely no statement about indicating that vaccines are a cause of autism. That is a complete mischaracterization of the findings of the case and a complete mischaracterization of any of the science we have at our disposal today."

This was really about mitochondrial diseases, not autism.

24. I was wathing a Congressional hearing on autism funding on Cspan last night
Edited on Sat Jan-09-10 03:47 PM by liberal_at_heart
There was clear hostility between the parents and the director of the National Institute for Mental Health. The only one I saw keep an objective stance was the scientist representing Autism Speaks. She clearly stated that she and her orginization are agnostic to whether vaccines are involved. She said that she does believe that therosaul(sp?) has been cleared but that we are now in the time of individualized medicine. There may be underlying medical conditions such as mitochondrial disease and other conditions in specific individuals that could be aggrevated by vaccines and that needed to be studied further. She also said that she wanted more research done on groups of individuals who are being vaccinated and those who are not. There are already grops of parents out there not vaccinated their children so it's not like they will have to ask parents not to vaccinate to participate in a study like this. They just have to find the individuals that are not being vaccinated and study them against those who are being vaccinated. She also wants to study other things like what happens in utero. Are there things happening in utero that can trigger autism? One of the parents there brought up something alot of us worry about but no one really addresses yet. That is what is going to happen to these kids once they turn 18? Will the support be there for them to get job training, further education if they are capable, independent living? I was glad to hear someone bring this topic up.

14. She's just a layperson who misinerpreted some research.
Her problem is that she never wanted to admit that she screwed up and went on a crusade for a mistake. If she were just willing to admit to at least herself that she screwed up, she could just stop.

She's just got way too much invested in terms of public image as well as self image.
