Poll question: Cooking with wine |
|
http://www.globalgourmet.com/food/egg/egg1197/cookwine.htmlI like to cook, so do others who don't have a job. Some of them are on welfare. Should they be able to buy alcohol with food stamps to be able to do so, or should it only be for working people to be able to do so?

1. Don't welfare benefits include cash as well, which can be used to purchase wine? |
|
IIRC it does, which means they are capable of buying some wine, which is good.

8. I say yes, foodstamps should be usable for wine |
|
Many years ago I used to work in a grocery store next to the food stamp office. What happened when folks needed/wanted something not available with food stamps (tp, booze, whatever) they would sell the food stamps for .50 on the dollar in order to make the purchase. For many people food stamps is their only income.

9. Of all the problems in the world, this is the least relevant |
|
Sorry, it's just not tugging at my heartstrings, and I cook with wine. However, if I had no income, it would not be a priority.

11. As much as I would love to say "yes, go for it", I have to say NO. |
|
I drink wine, and I cook with it, --and-- I was recently on food stamps. So I have a couple of dogs in this race, so to speak.
#1 Unemployed people would be wise to drink less than usual, not more than usual. Free alcohol could prompt unemployed alcoholics to just get wasted the first half of the month, and survive on ramen noodles the last half of the month.
#2 Children are the biggest population on food stamps, and any alcohol purchase just cuts into the family food budget.
#3 Good nutrition really should be the priority.
#4 Grape juice is a fairly good substitute for wine, in cooking.

15. Agree. I drink and smoke and I'm unemployed and broke. |
|
I will probably be able to go on food stamps soon. I won't be able to buy cigs or booze with them and that's fine with me.

12. Oh, wait. You wrote, "Some of them are on welfare". |
|
So that means they could be able to buy alcohol anyway, if they make a cash withdrawal first, couldn't they? Or not..?

13. They need food, not booze. |
|
What essential recipe can't they make without wine?
