First, antichoice zealots, now a *&%^*! PRO-Walmart group |
|
The local battles just keep popping up. I am working to lead a coalition against the anti-choice groups Susan B Anthony's list and Feminists for Life :puke: who purchased Susan B Anthony's birth place and are utilizing & lying about her legacy to further their campaign against choice. (Updates on that fight coming soon - I can report that we have a meeting Thursday & I have been in contact with historians. There is a lot of local interest to expose these frauds, so it should get very interesting). Hoping to have a day of awareness and protest organized for February 14th, the day of the ribbon cutting of the museum.
Meanwhile, four miles up the road, they want to build a Super Wal-mart.
And, the locals have organized a pro-Walmart group.
Yes, their leader is proud to have organized to fight the anti-Walmart group because they really want this store. They want competition, you see. I know. I know. The level of ignorance is astounding. The level of 'I want it as cheap as possible, no matter what the cost' is worse.
What I have gathered thus far, the local paper is bought and owned for the pro-Walmart side, the city appears to expediting the process with backroom deals and pushing this forward really fast.
My husband went to the anti-Walmart meeting and became the defacto leader of the movement against it. And, he is confronting a defeated attitude of 'what is the point', they are too to big to fight' from area businesses and locals who stand against it. Defeat before the battle even begins.
He has the worse end of the deal. I have a bunch of empowered women roaring to fight as a starting point. He has a apathetic or cowed group of individuals intimidated by the prospect of fighting a corporate giant (though hopefully I can send some support his way).
Yikes.

1. Wal Mart meat smells funny and tastes weird |
|
I stopped buying food from them a long time ago when I noticed that something wasnt right about their meat. Then someone told me that Wal Mart sprays some kind of bacteria on their steak to keep it looking red and fresh even past its expiration date. EWWWWW

4. Don't freak out, but it's not bacteria |
|
They use carbon monoxide, which does something to the cells in the meat and turns them permanently red.

2. An anti-WalMart group prevailed in Inglewood, California, a few years back. . . |
|
I don't have any information on them, but you may wish to check them out, see if you can contact those who lead the effort. They managed to kill the deal for a huge store, one that promised "hundreds, if not thousands of jobs" in a very job-starved area, by arguing persuasively about the negative impact WalMart would have on jobs and wages in the area. They also effectively used concerns about the environmental impact of such a "super" store to extract major concessions from WalMart before negotiations even began, and then to defeat the proposal based in part on those concerns.
Good luck.

3. A trailer park of senior citizens defeated them in Olympia WA a few years ago |
|
They wanted the property because it was halfway between Target & Shopko (their main competitors) and a Fred Meyer was also in the neighborhood. The old folks fought back, got to keep their trailer park, and that kept WalMart out of the area for several more years. Though, sadly they did eventually build a store a few miles east of the original planned location. At least nobody had to be evicted for that one (not even trees, from what I recall. Maybe some rodents who lived under the previously open field?)

6. Funny story about a local group trying to protect their neighborhood from bog box stores |
|
There was this property that Target was eyeing for a long time and as they started to make moves for it a local group banded together to fight them. I forget the legal procedures but they won. Target gave up and went to a different part of town.
But them Wal-mart/Sam's Club liked the property, but the anti-big box group was broke and couldn't mount any fight.
Now most of those folks wish they let Target come in.
Its so hard to know what unintended consequences can happen.
