Big MOFO 6.5 Earthquake just hit here in Humboldt
word on the radio is that is was a 6.5. Whole lotta shakin' going on and you can believe it from this 5th generation San Franciscan.

I was in the bathroom when it hit and braced myself in the doorway. It was a long strong jolt of a shake - lots of damage in Ferndale it seems.

YIKES!

Waiting for aftershocks as I type.

:dem:

3. thanks!
House seems ok but it is on slab floors luckily. Everyone is standing outside in the middle of the street on cell phones. I don't get that part of it.

Seems there have been 3 aftershocks so far. Woah Nelly!

5. We had a 6.5er or thereabouts
When I lived in King Salmon south of Eureka in '92 or so.

8. yeah I was living here then
there were two of them in one night - they were over 7+.

Problem up north here is that there are 3 plates that hit one another off the coast of Petrolia. Usually Ferndale, Fortuna, and Eureka bear the brunt of it.

I'm slightly north of Eureka luckily but woah!

11. Ferndale
is one of the most charming Victorian villages I've ever visited. Hope the damage isn't irreparable. My SIL lives in Eureka and we have not been able to get through. Probably knocked out a lot of power.

13. no power outages here but ...
we shut off the gas lines just to be safe. Will check the water lines outside too and shut them down just to be safe until some sort of emergency services show up around here.

Where oh where is that fire dept. I'm paying all of this money for every month for "emergency services" etc.?

ACK!

12. I surfed my bedroom when I was part of a 6.5 aftershock when I lived in SF
It was in 1992 and my parents were visiting on their way to LA (to see the King riots) when a 6.5 aftershock that came from a Reno quake. I lived on the 12th floor of a highrise (Clay and Franklin) and it happened in the middle of the night. The floor was jelly.

Hope all is well and you certainly have my sympathies... although I find quakes to be invigorating....

18. No! Don't hurt Ferndale!
My trailer in Mendocino was shaking about.

I wonder if my big old barn in Hydesville survived.

22. I have a friend who works on Main Street in Ferndale.
I'll give him a ring next week and see what the story is.

I really wonder if my big barn in Hydesville made it. I used to own a huge redwood barn that I saved only through some major shoring up work.

My folks in Healdsburg didn't feel a thing.
