KFC Australia commercial pulled: White man calms black crowd with fried chicken
KFC Commercials Offends Americans as Racist
January 09, 2010 06:17 PM EST

Here is the commercial that only aired in Australia, but is causing a ruckus in the United States. One white guy is at a cricket match surrounded by black people. He recommends appeasing the crowd with a bucket of fried chicken. Using the Internet, this commercial was not meant to be seen by politically correct people of the United States. It is offensive, but are we Americans so willing to condemn KFC and then, forgive Harry Reid for his "negro" remark about our president?

2. The ad offended West Indians in particular
Our team was in OZ and they came up with that disgusting ad.

Here's the ad

3. Yikes!
I can only imagine what was said among those that created the ad.

The couple of comments that were made about this blog are gems. Ugh.

4. Australians didn't get it
and it wasn't all that easy to explain to people why it might be deemed offensive.

10. Apparently, you're not familair with cricket
Australia was playing the Westies- and guess what color most people in the Islands are? To most Aussies, this wouldn't seem any different than an Oregon Duck fan in Green & Gold sitting amidst the USC red. Moreover, contrary to your assertion, no Aussies would have been offended in the reverse situation (say a lone Westie had offered up meaty pies to a crowd full of ockers).

and here's news:

The rest of the world doesn't revolve around American sensitivities- and frankly, this "naivety" is a good thing: we aren't sending up fighter jets and turning planes around for Gilligan's Island comments- or because there's some drunk bloke in the loo.

Most Aussies, as in the white variety? Let's ask a black one - one who can't take off his skin like a Ducks windbreaker - whether America has a monopoly on racial stereotyping.

They're no more in the know than me about what's supposed to be so racist about the ad...

18. Well if the rest of the world doesn't revolve around American sensitivities, why haven't we heard
about it before this? Next you'll be telling us that women can go topless on the beach.

We do, however, need more meaty pies, please.

22. "women can go topless on the beach."
Depends where you are as to whether you'll see that on any given day....

;-)

While not common like the south of France, it doesn't raise an eyebrow at my local beach. A bigger complaint (or source of amusement) is older men in their budgie smugglers....

or watermelon.

8. I know - Indian students have been victims of serious violence recently
but that is frightening for the universities who make gazillions from Indian students.

12. Oh please- don't bring the blond white girl gone missing theme
of the Indian media into this.

I actually saw the commercial when it first came out and thought, great- wait til this hits you tube.

21. Two Indian students have been beaten to death
recently. Now like you I am always wary about the Indian media since thugs in OZ actually beat up some of our players a few years ago, but the Australian press have also been discussing the attacks on Indian students.

24. The Indian government is now telling its media to knock it off
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6982718.ece

There's no evidence the recent student who was stabbed had any racial motivation- and two other incidents were Indians (or Nepalese- not certain) killing other Indians- or in a suspicious incident, setting a guy on fire.

Yes, there have been some problems- and race relations are complicated in Oz- often having to do with other ethnic minority groups from Lebannon or the Balkans in addition to white thugs.

Windies (why I called the cricket teams "westies" - I have no idea- it was hot out today) are here for another 5 matches in February. Your guy Chris Gayle is impressive.

27. Indians? Try the original people of Australia
the people referred to as Aboriginals. Extreme racism towards them, still to this day. Any racism towards Indians is minute comparatively. I'm not saying racism towards Indians is not bad, but seeing them as the only example mentioned misses the biggest and most disgraceful aspect of Australia.

11. What black people?
In Australia, to my understanding, the black people are Aboriginal, and wouldn't be associated with the fried chicken anyway?

Even if there were African immigrants, they wouldn't be via the U.S.

Color me confused.

13. We have a number of Sudanese refugees
but the point is well taken.

A "black fella" in Australia typically refers to aboriginal (or http://www.waynekrause.com/australian_aboriginal_koori.html"> Koori) people.
