What do DUers know about K2 synthetic weed?
Amazing how the republicans in my state are jumping up to ban it. A month ago I had never even heard of this.

Kansas Republican will try to ban K2 synthetic weed

Synthetic weed has finally broken out of Lawrence head shops and into Kansas City stores, but the clock is ticking.

A prefiled bill in the Kansas Legislature -- KS H.B. 2411 -- would criminalize synthetic cannabinoids and make them Schedule I controlled substances. The bill is sponsored by Robert Olson, an Olathe Republican and Majority Whip in the Kansas Legislature.

"The police have been fishing for this, and I've listened to them and their concerns," Olson says of Lawrence cops. "I've got a daughter in high school, and this is a dangerous drug. The concern is selling it to kids. Some kids start off and it leads to worse drugs and maybe some try it and manage to shake it off."

Olson has a press conference planned for Monday afternoon at the statehouse, where he'll officially announce the bill alongside law enforcement representatives.

Asked exactly how the faux-reefer was dangerous, Olson was unable to name specifics, and admitted that he had not contacted small business owners selling the product. Olson has also been apparently unwilling to try the product, instead relying on law enforcement for all the information that has led him to believe K2 is a time bomb of psychosis that, once embraced, will lead to pre-10 Commandment levels of lawlessness and eroticism in the streets, with kids smoking weapons-grade crystal meth just to feel normal.

Cantina paid $100 for this commercial. It's funny. I think that the creators might have been on synthetic weed.

11. never, ever trust a jayhawk! seriously... search news-leader.com for the stories...
its the local springfield, mo paper. it is a topic that has come up quite often.

the reporting is exactly what you think it would be. which means it probably won't help you. but there are articles.

i don't like drugs and children. i assume you don't either. whatever k2 is, it can't be good.

good luck...

10. if it's an herb it is NOT synthetic
And I doubt it contains cannabinoids either way. Until they identify the plant it is all conjecture but from the description it sounds like many of the "effects" may be of the placebo sort.

It is quite likely that some smartass young entrepreneur is selling oregano to high school kids by calling it "K2 Synthetic Weed" (which really is a funny name) and the high school kids have fed the legend through the placebo effect. Hell, I used to know a girl who would get drunk off kool-aid if you told her there was vodka in it. My guess is that it is similar to the Electric Banana craze; these idiot republicans have fallen for it.

12. No. It really does produce a high.
Here's more on it:

http://blogs.pitch.com/plog/2009/11/product_review_will_k2_synthetic_marijuana_get_you_high.php

The Johnson County Crime Lab ran an analysis on K2, finding it tested negative for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. But it did have synthetic cannabinoids, chemical compounds created in a lab that act on the brain like THC.

13. "K2" Is A Propaganda Gimmick:
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 12:14 AM by Mike K
The Reefer Madness gang is conscious of a rising change in the public's perception of marijuana and is responding with such innovative propaganda as this K2 nonsense. All of their old lies have been debunked so they're contriving new ones.

K2 contains no THC, so it isn't pot. It is something other. Period. "Cannabanoid properties" is semantic nonsense. But they are wise enough to know that as long as they can say something is dangerous and its description contains the word "marijuana," it will have the desired subliminal effect on the average parent and easily brainwashed citizen and will impose another hurdle for the pro-decriminalization movement to surmount.

14. Its from synthetic cannabinoids dreamed up by someone at Clemson

http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v09/n1015/a05.html?999

The Johnson County Crime Lab ran an analysis on K2. Although it tested negative for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, it was positive for synthetic cannabinoids. These are chemical compounds created in a lab that act on the brain like THC.

K2 contains two synthetic cannabinoids created at Clemson University. Chemistry professor John W. Huffman said an undergraduate student working in his lab actually created one of the compounds, called JWH-018 after Huffman's initials.

Huffman said his research was designed to help find new pharmaceutical drugs and a deeper understanding of brain chemistry. He had no intention of inventing a new way to get high.

"But I'm not the least bit surprised," Huffman said. "If you make something illegal, like marijuana, people will look for an alternative."

Now that you've fended off the dread salvia divinorum menace...Always some legislator afraid somebody somewhere might get high.

17. back when i was in college, somebody was selling 'synthetic opium'...
at least that's what he had called it when he sold it to some people i knew. when they showed it to me, it was in the form of these amber-coloured crystals. i had played the string bass in jr.high and high school- so i recognized it for what it was- violin bow rosin. (about all i can imagine is that it would make people 'high' by coating the inside of the lungs and depriving the brain of oxygen...? i can't imagine it being too good for you...)
my friends weren't too happy- and i don't think that the guy sold it for too much longer.
