2. do you know for certain that he wasn't inclined to do just that?
I think the 'hoot' comes from folks who believed that we should have put ANYTHING past that administration.

5. I don't think a bit of harm was done
. . . by even the most alarmist speculation of his intent toward Iran. I believe that speculation actually encouraged whatever measure or writ of restraint we're benefiting from today. I never underestimate the effort it takes to influence the public (and legislative) debate. In the case of Iran, I believe raising the prospect of an imminent attack may have prevented what I saw as a mission creep in that direction.

4. I think that they were definitely "jonesing" to attack Iran
The problem (for them) was that Iraq became too much of a disaster, both militarily and politically, for them to be able to attack Iran. Had Iraq been truly a "cakewalk" (complete with candy and flowers being thrown at the feet of our soldiers and a successful transition to a friendly Jeffersonian democracy), you can almost bet that they would've gone after Iran- it was part of the "axis of evil" after all- eventually.

6. Um..didn't a report come out that basically said
that they just couldn't afford to in the end?

I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. Cheney was eager to but the military top brass advised against it.
