Poll question: Are you going to vote in the MidTerms?
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 05:36 PM by jillan
The reason why I'm asking is because I keep hearing one pundit after another questioning if the Democratic Base is going to be motivated to come out and vote during the midterms.

I consider DUers a part of the base, and personally I think the pundits are full of crap.

Let's see....

edit to add - feel free to comment - I am curious as to where people's heads are at concerning the midterms.

Personally - I am going to be working my butt off to keep dems in power, despite my disappointments.

7. Fuck yes - our POS Senator Bond is finally retiring, and our secretary of state Robin Carnahan
stands a good chance of winning. From two male Republicans to two female Dems representing our state in only 4 years...that would be SWEET!

9. I don't believe the concern is so much will Democrats vote as it is, will they be motivated?. . .
Casting the vote is only the final act in the process. Better to ask, will Democrats talk up our candidates, raise funds, inspire our neighbors to go to the polls, and find rationales for involvement greater than "our candidate's not a Republican." Absent an intellectual base and an emotional motivation, the party could find itself at quite a disadvantage against the teabag nutjobs.

15. Bingo! THAT'S the real & relevant question! Will there be boots on the ground?
And how many people will want to donate money to a "lesser of two evils"?

Who's going to feel inspired enough to go door-kocking, to do phone-banking, to send checks? It won't be me, I can tell you that now. Not unless my Dem Congresscritter who voted for the Stupak amendment has a progressive challenger I can get behind.

10. Well, there's an open congressional seat in a district that once came down to just 700 votes
So that means I probably need to vote. I just hope there's a candidate worth voting for. I busted my ass to get Brian Baird elected, and was often disappointed that I did so.

11. Yes. But in the primaries and the general election I will not vote for
an incumbent. None. Only new names, not "the name you know."

The weasels in place have had ample opportunity to screw things up (and they have been fairly successful) and to line their pockets. It is time for a new crop of weasels to belly up to the food trough.

14. People who are engaged politically will vote
although they'll do it with little enthusiasm.

What are being turned off are mainstream voters who are tuned in only enough to know they have no representation in DC from either party.

Yes, the worst Democrat is better than the best Republican. However, if we get a screw job on health care, good luck on convincing many people off the pol boards of that.

I hope some viable candidates will come out of the Democratic primaries that we can run against the Republicans. Hopefully some good candidates will see the primaries as an opportunity so that we can have some choice and we can send some of the fools we have now back home to pick the lint out of their navels and wonder, "What the Hell happened? I was getting rich.":wtf:

So when they say they've been betrayed or aren't going to vote in November, well, we're not exactly going to miss their support -- since we never had it anyway.

49. Well, I am a DK guy who voted for Obama
and he is pretty much as expected "far too conservative for my tastes", he was far better in my opinion than the alternative which was offered (McCain) . In 2010 & 2012 I will go to the polls, but that does not mean either he or any other particular candidate will get my vote, as I am finished voting for what I consider the "lesser of two......." I am also exceptionally dissappointed with Congress and in particular my "Democratic" Senator McCaskil, (who will never get another dime of my money) so we will see what the future brings in the polling booth.

28. My mind has been changing on that.
Vote or not, I feel we can complain. My friend's main complaint is that his vote doesn't count, and with what we've seen from Diebold et al I can't say with certainty that he's wrong. He still gets to complain though, and his complaints are pretty good, to be honest. :)

39. I get what you're saying
But it's like in my town people want to complain about the city council, but don't get off their butts to vote. In Texas, we're busying trying to get Perry out of office, we need people to vote to get rid of these fuckers.

I had a friend last night, we were talking about how he needs to update his driver's license address, voter registration, etc. He said he doesn't need his voter registration until next go around for president. I said "oh hell no, we gotta get rid of Rick Perry, you better update that address and get your ass out there or I'll beat the crap outta you." ;)

24. I vote and vote for Dems and liberal/progressive
at federal, state and county level.

This does not mean I feel represented nor pleased.

I will not vote for some Dems based on track record - DiFi has had my last vote.

My rural precinct has had no live voting since 2007 ; all by mail. I missed one election because I thought the mail ballet a sample ballot and went to the elementary school for voting to be turned away.

I do not support the DLC/neo-liberals. They are essentially neo-con in economics, social, and foreign policy.

Obama has been a disappointment in multiple issues by direction and form not speed of policy change; I did not expect a quick fix to anything.

30. Yes, but not for the reason given
My Congressman is Keith Ellison, who is a pretty decent guy.

But even more important are the down-ballot races, the local races that REALLY have an impact on my everyday life. I want good people on the city council, the park board, the school board, etc.

If I were in western Minnesota, where pseudo-Democrat Colin Peterson reigns, I would definitely vote third party, because there would really be no significant difference between him and a Republican.

There's always that little worry in the back or my mind that if everyone thought it was wrapped up for the Democrats and just counted on everybody else to vote, the Republicans would win!

That is how the Rethugs won in 2000. Never mind Florida being close, it was because people thought Gore (and even Kerry in 2004)) had it all sewn up.
