So, Doughy Pantload's mom was Nixon's press mole. Ha!
Just saw the segment on Rachel's repeat. Here's a bit from the NYT article:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In newly released papers from his presidency, Richard Nixon directs a purge of Kennedy-era modern art -- ''these little uglies'' -- orders hostile journalists to be frozen out and fusses over White House guest lists to make sure political opponents don't make it in.

As his lieutenants built an ambitious political espionage operation that tapped scribes as spies, Nixon is shown preoccupying himself with the finest details of dividing friend and foe...

~snippers~

...Nixon historians have known for years about ''Chapman's Friend,'' code name for a working journalist who doubled as a paid informant, reporting to the president's political operatives about campaigning Democrats.

Seymour K. Freidin was the first source, succeeded by Lucianne Goldberg. Years later she became known as the literary agent who encouraged Linda Tripp to tape conversations she had with Monica Lewinsky about the intern's relationship with President Bill Clinton...

It's kind of insane that Nixon's lesser minions still hold sway all these years later - Cheney, Rove and Jonah Goldberg's mom.

3. Well, at least it wasn't Brit Hume
Not that I give two shits about Brit Hume - it's just that I would have been terribly sad knowing that Jack Anderson was being punked by one of his lackeys. I still pray the ghost of Anderson will show up one night at the edge of Brit's bed and slap scare the shit out of him.

4. Lucianne was a protege of Murray Chotiner, Nixon's long-time dirty tricks operative.
Edited on Tue Jan-12-10 02:20 AM by leveymg
A fascinating figure, part Dashiell Hammett character, part Red-Baiting McCarthyite super snoop and GOP opposition researcher, Chotiner was a product of LA of the 1940s. Completely ruthless, he met his end one day in January 1974 sitting in a sedan parked beside the road next to the McLean, VA Kennedy Compound with a line of sight to the room where Ted Kennedy took his calls and received guests. Too bad he had chosen to park in the very spot that a large, speeding truck would also momentarily occupy. Fitting end for one of America's most shadowy political operatives.

5. Awesome historical trivia!
That Murray Chotiner sounds like a real sleaze. I can't decide if modern politics is more like organized crime or like the underhanded dealings of a royal court. Either way, what a soul-sucking way to may a living. It may be worse than show business!

As for Lucianne, nice hair. Sort of Endora does Samantha, if you get my drift. ;)

8. Insightful. Chontiner was on the Lansky/Siegel/Cohen payroll. LG's hair is bewitched.

Goldberg certainly didn't get by on her looks alone.

Here's part of a fascinating thread on the GOP-West Coast mafia connection: http://educationforum.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=4643

Murray Chotiner was also associated with Mickey Cohen, one of the leaders of the mob in Los Angeles. Chotiner persuaded Cohen to supply funds for Nixon's election campaigns in 1946 and 1950. This story was published by Drew Pearson in 1956 and 1959. Nixon did not sue Pearson but the story was not confirmed until Cohen signed confession in October, 1962. At the time he was in Alcatraz prison. Cohen claims he raised $75,000 for Nixon in 1950 in return for political favours. This deal was arranged via Chotiner. In his autobiography, Cohen claims that the orders to help Nixon came from Meyer Lansky. This is interesting as there is evidence that Bebe Rebozo, Nixon and Lansky were involved in business deals in pre-Castro Cuba.

And, here's a little "family photo" taken at the Florida White House: Rebozo, Hoover, and Nixon, c. 1972.

7. she was a mole in the McGovern campaign too
so, yeah, she has been at the center of dirty tricks for years and years. I'm no big fan of the Clintons, but I think that whole scandal with Lewinsky was part of a set up that played to Clinton's weakness. didn't wash the dress for sentimental reasons? right.

the thing about republican dirty tricks is this:

they could not and did not stop fundamental changes in social views that were instigated and continue to be instigated by the progressive, or forward-looking members of society who support individual freedom/equality not marginalization by race or gender or various other boxes, like wealth.

all their conniving brought about economic hardship for Americans but did not stop the intellectual evolution that makes economic changes possible. Even now, with all the propaganda, Americans are not fooled by the failure of conservatives in either party to bring about fundamental health care rights for Americans.

That is coming too.

Health care for Americans is going to happen, because it is a shame of this society that we are the only western democracy that does not use part of its abundant wealth to insure the health of its citizens.

Sometimes I have to look at the civil rights movement to see how anything has ever been accomplished in this nation. Societal change that treats others with humanity is, amazingly, always a struggle because there are some in this world who can justify any atrocity, if they think they benefit.

...just a little thought for my day.

10. Affirmative Action For Sure
I don't see why legacy employment is considered, by the radical right, to be any different than any other form of affirmative action.

They use "affirmative action" as a means of denigrating the beneficiaries because they're somehow less qualified. Well, that definition fits Mama's Boy Jonah to the nth degree. Somehow being a beneficiary of Mommy's contact to get positions for which you are underqualified is ok, but making sure someone gets to go to lawschool because their ancestry reflects decades/centuries of disadvantage is not.

Makes no sense. Especially given the lack of any discernable talent in Jonah.

11. Having had to work with Doughy pantload on a project in a former job
this post has made my day. And I am fairly certain that Doughy gave mummy and Linda Tripp instructions on how to tape Lewinsky. But this nickname, again, is making me laugh out loud... good endorphins to start the day.
