The IRS has been targeting people for audits simply because they don’t make enough money.

When people report incomes below the poverty line, the IRS has been using that as an excuse to conduct audits because the government claims that those people “can’t get by” with such low incomes.

Further, the IRS is refusing to allow some of these people with low incomes to claim children as dependents after the auditing process because, the IRS reasons, if they don’t make enough money to “get by” in a given city then there is no way they could be providing for a dependent child.

These policies are so insensitive to the reality of poverty in the United States. Millions of people with low incomes live in cities alongside much wealthier residents and provide for dependent children. It is outrageous that the IRS would specifically target people simply for not making enough money.

1. Its the shift in policy by republicans we are seeing now

When I started my business I Like many many others had Zero income for the first three years. paying off debt whilst reinvesting every penny. etc.

I was audited in 2003 a full five years after I had started up. proving that I was living on site with zero income yet the mortages, insurance were paid. when the agent showed up I showed him my empty fridge.

now with Unemployment so high lots of friends are starting heir own Businesses...
after seeing 9 of 10 audited their first year... it seems that if you are to start your own business EXPECT to get audited. within the first three years. regardless of how much or how little you make.

whilst "established" businesses where the owners are making six figure incomes write off everything and nearly brag about not getting audited.

the shift occurred around 2002-2003 where the IRS goes after poor people instead of wealthier bigger fish. as the poor are easier to collect from as well as I am sure republicans instituted the shift.

one would think that auditing poor people would not make the IRS enough in extra income to pay the auditing agent.

7. This is where the urge to be mean to the less powerful starts working against one's best interest.

Rich people is where the money's at. And it's them who do the most tax evasion. You'd think the IRS, of all institutions, would be razor-sharply set on maximizing the revenue.
