Smugglers caught trying to sell 36-year-old meat
Smugglers caught trying to sell 36-year-old meat
January 12, 2010 • 2:27 pm
By Diana FasanellaUkrainian smugglers were busted by Russian police trying to supply markets in Moscow with 36-year-old meat.

A truck carrying 22 tons of meat that was “deep frozen” since 1974 was seized by the Interior Ministry’s economic security unit, Bloomberg reports.

The shipment worth $68,000 came from a “strategic reserve” of American meat in an unidentified Latin American nation. It had been kept in freezers until authorities decided to sell it because its consumption period was over.

The meat was brought to the port of Odessa, where it was divided into small consignments, which were later delivered from Kharkov to the Belgorod Region. It was delivered by trucks to Moscow and other regions, where it was sold under forged documents.

4. What's the problem here?
When I was in Vietnam in 1967-68, we got C-Rations in cases with WWII dates. Like 1942.

7. Agreed. Packed right, the meat should be fine.
As part of my long-term-storage food reserves, I have a case of #10 cans full of steaks. Dry-frozen and nitrogen packed, they have a virtually unlimited shelf life.

14. 1974 was an excellent year for meat.
Not so much pop music, unfortunately. Too much "Billy, Don't Be a Hero," "Seasons in the Sun" and "The Night Chicago Died." But meat? Oh yeah.

20. By 1969 we had worked our way up to Korean-war vintage
C-rations. Most of it was alright. The chopped-ham-and-eggs were not alright.

26. And it's so well-traveled! Whoever thought of taking 22 tons of the stuff from a shadowy...
... Latin American location by boat to Odessa and then all over the former Soviet Union -- genius, sheer genius.

Uck. Imagine all the opportunities along the way for that meat to partially thaw, refreeze, partially thaw.... It got cut up into smaller batches -- bet that was a sanitary process too. I wouldn't use that meat for dog food at this point, and these yokels were selling it for human consumption using forged documents.
:scared:

No conscience involved.

Hekate
