"the current health care DEFORM monstrosity" -- pass it, and it becomes the gift
Edited on Wed Jan-13-10 07:54 AM by thotzRthingz

which keeps on giving... to the FOR-PROFITs and the GOP (not to the average American)! We *must* insist that CONGRESS scrap this poison pill .... and start over, giving us SINGLE PAYER (and sending the FOR-PROFITs "packing" to peddle their wares elsewhere, anywhere except for preying within/upon our HEALTH conditions)!

While *you* may think it absolutely necessary to get something, anything passed & signed into law... you had better think real hard about this one. It is a TROJAN HORSE (a faux "gift" to America -- and a complete victory for the health care industry FOR-PROFITs).

12 January 2010

There are many reasons to hope that the current health care deform monstrosity doesn't get through Congress just so that Obama/Emmanuel can say that they have produced "something." As a health care policy analyst for over 40 years, I know most of those reasons.

But one stands out and it has nothing to do with the health care system reasons for hoping for failure, which include:

* no public option (since one would never get past the Senate no matter what the House does and the latter will likely drop it anyway);

* a massive taxpayer subsidy to the private "health" insurance companies and their profits;

* the creation, by so doing, of a further stranglehold on the health care delivery system making it highly unlikely that any further changes will be accomplished until at enormous further public expense down the road the insurance companies themselves crash and burn under the ever-increasing cost inflation that this legislation does nothing substantive about;

* the taxation of the relatively "good" policies;

* the lack of any planning mechanisms, something that is essential if costs are ever to be brought under control;

* and finally the fact that even with all the public expenditures, not everybody will be covered and it will take until 2019 until everybody for whom the legislation aims to provide coverage actually gets it.

As for the political weapons that the hydra-headed monster gives the GOP, well they are already licking their chops. Don't believe me? Just listen to Sean Hannity (and I do, after taking a suitable dose of Dramamine, of course).

3. I wish it weren't so...sadly, this version of "HCR" is another in our faces demonstration of what's
wrong with our system. The influence of big money/corporate interests over the political process is deep and profound. They own it now and the only question to be answered is: will we take it back or not?

4. re: "...the only question to be answered is: will we take it back or not?"

"...will we take it back or not?"

I would very much like to see that happen, in my lifetime (which, statistically, I'm on the wanning side of--I'll turn 60 this summer). Some (most?) here at DU seem to be under the impression that I am a "troll" (I presume that means they think I am a GOP'r)... how wrong they are!

However; unlike many (most?)... I am a registered Independent voter... and I am serious about the need to KILL THIS BILL, and start over... making SINGLE PAYER the only acceptable outcome (that's something else which I would like to see happen, in my lifetime).

5. Thanks for posting this. This legislation will return the GOP to power.
We have to do all we can to improve it and minimize the damage NOW, then give a long look to our options for the next election cycles.
