3. Please become a fan of Yele Haiti on Facebook
This is Wyclef Jean's organization. You can also text "yele" to 501501 to donate $5 -- this will be charged to your cell phone bill.

My 11 year old daughter woke up this morning with an entire plan of how to raise money for Haiti. She called my mom for her sugar cookie recipe and plans to sell cookies to help the people, especially the children, of Haiti.

5. I'll be giving all I can to "Feed My Starving Children"
Their warehouse survived the earthquake, and they are giving out meals to the victims as we speak.

Another organization I recommend is ActionAid: http://www.actionaidusa.org/

6. Direct Relief International says a recent bequest allows it to use 100% of donations for programs
Edited on Wed Jan-13-10 11:39 AM by ima_sinnic
http://www.directrelief.org/OurFinances/TransparencyandAccountability/ProgramFundingFAQ.aspx

It has committed to $1 million in aid to medical partners in Haiti (Partners in Health, St. Damien Children’s Hospital, and Visitation Hospital), with $420,000 in supplies apparently already arrived, as of yesterday.
http://www.directrelief.org/EmergencyResponse/2010/EarthquakeHaiti.aspx

According to Charity Navigator, DRI was already at 98%+ for programs.

11. Thanks for that info ... I've been trying to figure out all morning
which charity would be best. I've traditionally given to American Red Cross (very reluctantly) and Doctors Without Borders (with whom I'm pretty fed up) in these emergency situations. This sounds like boots-on-the-ground, efficient aid.

I'm going to go make the contribution to them now.

12. I also chose Action Against Hunger b/c it's been established in Haiti since 1985
http://www.actionagainsthunger.org/pressroom/releases/2010/01/13

I was looking for something in addition to medical. This group focuses on hunger and sanitation. It has 56 locals on its staff, with 7 from other countries.

15. LAMBI
From Charity Navigator--

Founded jointly in 1994 by Haitians and Americans, the Lambi Fund of Haiti is a unique grassroots organization whose mission is to assist the popular, democratic movement in Haiti. Its goal is to help strengthen civil society in Haiti as a necessary foundation for democracy and development. The Lambi Fund never dictates to a community organization what should be done; through discussion and reflection, the peasants decide what is best for their community and present the project to the Lambi Fund for support. Lambi focuses its funding in five main project areas: sustainable development, community micro-credit, animal husbandry, environment, and organizational and leadership thinking.

22. mods can we merge and sticky/pin these relief effort links?
Edited on Wed Jan-13-10 08:38 PM by pitohui
some people may be waiting for a payday on friday etc. and it would be nice for them to be able to easily find the links again later

my pick was doctors w.out borders but there are many good organizations here...

the people of the world helped us in katrina, people from all over the world contributed, even those w. very very little came forward

it's time for us to pay back

25. If you want more information to sort out which organization to give to:
Charity Navigator has a lot of information and rates charities based on their financial health and on how much of what you give goes toward program and how much toward administration and fundraising.

44. Piggybacking a link to RN Response Network
They are working to get nurses into the country. Hope you don't mind

Donate to this effort:

https://secure.ga1.org/05/rnrn_relief_fund

Link for nurses who wish to volunteer and information on what you will need:

http://www.nationalnursesunited.org/

And an FYI link to their press release of Jan 6, 2009 where they opposed the excise tax on workers' benefits. This was also a group that worked very hard for single payer health care. They have been active in the efforts to reform health care here.
