I have three Haitian employees
No phone calls getting to their families back home. Already the poorest nation in the hemisphere. I have known these beautiful people for years. Please DU people, give what you can. A standing shack is better than no shack. Shame on us for allowing so much poverty & misery so close to our country. They were already eating dirt. Tragedy, the people have the patience of Job. Thanks... Peace, Richard

3. the small number of responses to this thread so far is because we don't know what to say
I can't imagine... I just cannot begin to imagine... how they are suffering, being so far away, not knowing whether their loved ones are hurt, dead, hungry, thirsty....

The entire world is heartbroken but we just don't know what to say. Please do tell them how much people care.

5. I know I am at a loss for words
They just don't have anything there. Two bad hurricanes last year, ruined ecologically, not much hope before this. The shame of our hemisphere. Thanks for your thoughts. Peace, Richard

18. Please do tell them people care ~
Not the time to talk about Haiti's sad history, but sometimes you have to wonder if there is a god, what kind of cruel god is it?

I hope your friends hear from their loved ones as soon as communication is possible.

6. Richard, please tell your employees
that they can go home to Haiti on paid leave (they can REALLY use the money), if you can afford to help out for at least two weeks. Offer them round trip tickets to Port au Prince. When they return, they will be eternally grateful for your assistance.

Otherwise, they have my sympathies and hope that their family got out of the quake unscathed.

7. please tell them how sorry we are for this. Our state had a 10
earthquake (it was revised up) and there is nothing like the horror of it.

12. You welcome I wish I could get that info in
and I understand this... Mexico City Quake, it took us three days to learn that they were fine, through a HAM radio operator from oh Texas.

Let them know, seriously, that twitter and FB are working the same way right now. Which is odd given the computer capacity on the Island.

14. Two more things
Edited on Thu Jan-14-10 02:11 AM by nadinbrzezinski
the Red Cross should by now be running (as much as they can) the usual database to get families in contact. The ARC is the default one for the US, and that database, the central one will be in Geneva. Have them contact the ARC and see about getting on the database.

Oh and the Department of State is also running this service for Haitian Americans...

Looking for loved ones in Haiti

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday 10 miles from Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. Many lines of communication were cut off by the quake, leaving families worried about loved ones in Haiti they were unable to reach.

And if you're in Haiti or know anything about the situation, please take a look through these photos and share in the comments any information you may have.
