3. They are obviously moving as fast as is humanly possible
do you think that a magic wand can just be waved and presto magico the Vinson will appear off Haiti? Sorry, it doesn't work that way. And there are logistics involved in organizing and coordinating a relief effort this massive. You can't do it with any degree of effectiveness without organization.

You are clueless.

Until they've tried alternative methods, I'm not impressed.

but this thread made me giggle from the moment I saw it--and your response, well, I've already shamed myself, so

7. teleportation does not exist yet.
Better to get some coordination going, to get things done, than everyone arriving half prepared and jumping on top of each other.

And yes, it's hard to watch the suffering.

20. I'm sure they're all moving as fast as is possible.
The airport is closed for now, so everything will have to come another way. Cargo helicopters are probably already en route. If you have any suggestions of ways to further speed things up, I'm sure we'd like to hear them.

23. I'm sure that Cuba and Venezuela are helping, among others
Cuba even offered help during Katrina (Bush turned them down, of course), and Haiti is just a short hop away from them.

The Reuters picture series had a picture of Venezuelan military personnel loading planes with relief supplies.

25. They FIRST need to assess what they need
I hate to point this out, but the WRONG kinds of supplies can create their own little crisis.

Also the initial teams are aleady ON THE WAY, like two DMAT teams, including Search and Rescue heavy lift. That requires a tower for the airport which is JUST NOW in place.

Speed boats have carried stuff since last night and they're coming from very direction - planes, ships helicopters. You'd be surprised at the speed.

38. Well it's our fault we hadn't created those transporter systems like they have on Star Trek....
:eyes:

Didn't this earthquake just happen last night? I think we are working as fast as we can but there are some limits when it comes to getting the stuff there. I mean geez, we have to load the planes with humanitarian needs and we have to fly the planes down there.

39. I saw a clip of Chinese rescue workers earlier where four men were
carrying large cases and loading them into vans. Them and other around them were all literally running to get their gear loaded and getting prepared to set off for Haiti.

Yes, people are hurting and dying but these things take time.

42. one thing we all tend to do is project our own local knowledge on to areas
where we have limited knowledge.

I learned today that Haiti has one runway with no taxi way. Thus an airplane has to land, unload, then take off or be pushed to the side to allow another plane to land. Coming from a guy who buried a forklift in asphalt in college, I can tell you that stuck planes and pallets of supplies off to the side of a runway could create some havoc.

So you have to remember, air traffic control had to be set up, and then came the logistical nightmare of getting the planes in and out. Pushing the cargo out the side door won't work, and I am guessing there aren't a shitload of industrial supply rental places so I will withhold my criticism.
