http://qifd.org/

QIFD is setting up an campaign to raise emergency relief funds for the victims. Please help us by clicking on the donate button in the right hand corner. No amount is too small. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated by the people of Haiti.

I just came from the grocery store and everyone there were trying to find out how they could help. They were worried about aid getting through to the people who really need it.

I'm going to print this out and take it with me for the rest of the day.

19. I can't donate, but I can volunteer.
I can run almost all office software and perform almost any office task. I have experience tracking inventories and receiving new items. I have a decade of experience in dealing with federal agencies, reading and interpreting regulations, and soliciting advice and information from the federal government. I have some construction experience. I have a good back.

I'm underemployed and have nothing but time.

My passport is out of date, but I my recollection is that expedited passports can be issued, sometimes within 72 hours, if one goes to the DC office. I can be there at 8 am tomorrow, and I can borrow the money I need to pay for it. But other than that, I am insolvent.

Is anyone accepting volunteers for aid distribution or other forms of on-site relief?

35. When we dropped by their HQ/warehouse, we were told that a 2-container shipment was in the harbor...
... when the quake struck. The woman we spoke with said they didn't know yet if the 20' and 40' containers were still stuck onboard or not, but photos from the air showed that the unloading crane was broken off into the harbor and useless. One of their people is on his way already to assess the situation on the ground. Meanwhile a million dollars more in aid has been pledged, so more will be on the way. DRI is one of my favorite organizations -- they use practically nothing for their overhead expenses, so you know your dollars are going right to work.

41. this previous DU post has a list of 28 organizations active in Haiti
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x7454711

Action Against Hunger has been there since 1985 and has about 56 locals on staff, with only 7 from other countries
Direct Relief International has been assisting refugees and disaster victims with medical care since 1948 and has a partnership with 3 hospitals in Haiti--and 100% of donations go to programs, overhead is covered by a bequest.

61. Partners in Health have been working in Haiti for years. They are one the very best.
I have quite a few friends involved with aid and development in Haiti. Almost every one has recommended Partners in Health. http://www.pih.org/home.html . PIH does NOT have hundreds of office workers who eat up donations.

One friend wrote: If you want to contribute to relief efforts in Haiti, consider donating to Partners In Health, an amazing organization with a long track record in Haiti. They have already set up a temporary hospital in Port au Prince since the earthquake hit, and need donations: http://www.pih.org/home.html

They need money, of course, but also medical folks -- surgeons, nurses, other medical personnel.

Update: January 13, 2010, 7:30pm
Wanted: Surgeons, nurses, and other medical personnel to help in Haiti

We are deeply grateful for the multitude of people who have contacted us wanting to provide medical assistance. As patients flood to our sites from Port-au-Prince, we're finding ourselves in need of both medical personnel and supplies. In particular, we need surgeons (especially trauma/orthopedic surgeons), ER doctors and nurses, and full surgical teams (including anesthesiologists, scrub and post-op nurses, and nurse anesthetists).

If you are a health professional interested in volunteering, please send an email to volunteer@pih.org with information on your credentials, language capabilities (Haitian Creole or French desired), availability, and contact information.

As phone lines in Haiti remain down and transportation and communication are difficult, PIH is still in the process of determining where we can set up operations in Port-au-Prince, and how we can transport patients and volunteers to our sites. We will be able to offer more concrete information after these logistical matters are resolved.

Once again – thank you for your support. Kenbe fèm.

62. from aid workers on the ground... excellent advice.
Excellent blog post from someone in Haiti
http://talesfromethehood.wordpress.com/2010/01/13/haiti/
I’ll update and add to this post later: For now, in the interests of getting it up there, a companion to Saundra’s post on choosing where/how to donate for earthquake response in Haiti. (Read Saundra’s post)

General Guidelines:

Don’t go to Haiti. If you’re not already employed by a relief organization that is working in Haiti, stay put. Just because it’s close (for Americans) and you can get your visa at the airport doesn’t mean that you’re needed there in person.

Send Cash, not stuff. Please do not collect food or clothes or anything else and then try to ship it to Haiti. Cash is the only thing you should be thinking of donating right now. Sorry, but this has to be said: think twice about supporting organizations that are asking for in-kind donations for Haiti.

Please Re-read this post: What to Do: The Donor Edition – Emergency Response.

For those in the United States, InterAction is probably your best consolidated source for information on which US-registered organizations are responding to this disaster. Here’s the link.Text

Lots more excellent info at the site.
