Powerful message. Seems truer and truer each passing day.

Peace.

2. Unfortunately, many of the hippies became yuppies.
Before someone jumps in to angrily list their bona fides, I know that some stayed true.

But if all the hippies, progressives, and just-plain-reasonable people in the late sixties and early seventies had stuck to their principles, we'd never be in this mess.

Someone waved a few bucks under their noses and a whole bunch of them found Jebus overnight.

3. No, the college kid wannabe hippies sometimes did
but the bulk of the yuppie scum came from the second cohort of boomers, those born after 1954 and really too young to have been hippies.

4. Well, I was born at the tail end of '59.
I was too young to be a practicing hippie, but I was certainly in sympathy with them.

You may be right that people my age never really took a side to begin with. I certainly assumed that my peers had working brains in the 60's/70's but maybe they didn't.

7. Thanks for de-bunking the hippies to yuppies myth
I learned a lot being a hippie - how to grow food and dope, how to make cheese and maple syrup, how to milk goats and can tomatoes, how to make a passive solar shower, how to cut wood and start a fire, how to bake pita bread and grind flour, how to weave and sew and knit, how to give birth outside a hospital, how to share resources and barter, and how to create my own entertainment. In a lot of ways, I feel more prepared for the future than most Americans

11. being a hippie (STILL) didn't teach me those things--I learned a lot of it at home--STILL know how
to garden, cook, can, sew, etc.,

as you said, we are a lot better prepared than a lot of folks. was talking with a friend who is a butcher one day last summer, about how people were shopping more--learning how to cook, because the economy is such that people can't afford restaurants and fast food--since we know how to cook, how to shop wisely, etc, and have been doing it most of our lives, seems we are somewhat ahead of the game, in that department, at least.

My mom was the hippie.

6. Great pic!
Beautiful garden. You have a green thumb!

I've been a gardner my whole life too and wish all people could and would garden. Healthy, fresh air, excercise, healthy food as a result, a pretty cheap way to add healthy food to the diet. I'm so at peace when I'm in my garden. Endless benefits to gardening for food.

Thanks for posting.

Peace

13. BTW I almost forgot..
Less is more. Know exactly what you mean. The more I adopt that philosophy in life, the happier I've become.

Dropping the materialism and simplifying life have made life so much easier. It's a greener lifestyle as a bonus.

Peace

14. Thanks for the kind words.
In 2006, we sold everything and moved to The Woods (very rural South).
What we can't make ourselves, we buy or barter 2nd Hand or salvage, and make it work....
or do without.

We grow a good percentage of our own food,
and keep chickens and HoneyBees.

We are no longer good American Consumers.
Next year, we will CONSUME even less.
It IS a learning process.

We ARE old Hippies,
And we ARE using lots of things we learned in the 60s....
with some differences.
Anyone who wants to be a poet, musician, or muse does so AFTER work,
and we now shoot guns.

You are right about Gardening.
It feeds our Spirit and brings deep satisfaction.

Almost all of my distress these days comes from DU and Cable TV.
I am currently romancing the idea of turning both OFF for good.

16. A wall dedicated to the civilians killed by the North Vietnamese
Would be 20 times the size of that wall.

When did the hippies ever adopt any sort of large scale zero impact living? They were driving cars, living in houses, and using resources just like everyone else. If everyone was a hippy there would still be environmental damage.

Lets just face it. The Hippy movement failed decades ago. It is just a pipe dream fantasy of the past.
