"OK, kids, who wants to be Tasered?"
Kankakee Taser incident: Cops, school district investigating unsanctioned Taser demonstration by officer in which child was hospitalized.

By Joel Hood and Andrew L. Wang
Tribune reporters
January 14, 2010

A police officer is on leave, students are puzzled and parents are outraged as the fallout from a Taser demonstration gone awry rippled through the halls of Kankakee Junior High School on Wednesday.

Kankakee police said an officer assigned to the school zapped three male students who had volunteered to be part of an unsanctioned, classroom demonstration on Tuesday. Police said the Taser was used on the students for about a second, but long enough to send at least one briefly to a hospital.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the Police Department and school district investigate.

The mother of one of the students said the officer entered the classroom yelling, "Who wants a Taser?"

"I was like, 'Let me try it on my finger,' and he was like, 'Let me try it on your thigh,' " the boy, Miles Maiden, told WLS-Ch. 7.

The boy's mother, Alta Young, told Channel 7 that Maiden has a heart mur- mur and that when she found out about the incident, she took him to the emergency room. He was released soon after.

Although police and school officials would not confirm it, Young said this wasn't the first time the officer has used a Taser on students in class.

3. Stupid kids volunteered. I don't think this is worth getting too excited over.

If I recall, aren't officers required to experience the taser during their training? Hell, someone should tell all these crazy kids that you can BUY stun-guns and stuff on the open market.. completely legal. Seriously, go to a gun show and you can buy real Taser-International tasers or cheap hand held stunners/prods. You can hear them clicking as people play with them nonstop at many gunshows.

The part about the trip to the ER was just fearmongering hyperbole... the kid's mother was extra worried so decided to take the kid on her own recognizance and the ER released him quickly. :eyes: But saying it like that wouldn't scare or inflame as many people.

7. I was just making a statement that they are commonly available.

You can buy on the internet as well as a bunch of places - I just mentioned gun shows because I've personally seen them there. The point is, it's a commonly available item these students can try out if they really wanted. If the people freaking out over some cop demonstrating a stun-gun, God only knows what these parents would think if their kids brought one home from a pawn shop or something. Yes the cop made a not-so-bright choice: don't ask students in school if they want to experience a taser. However people need to realize this is not some exotic perilous situation... hardy worthy of hyperbole or fear-mongering. The cop needs a good talking to and maybe a week or two to think about his actions and how to act next time. I never said his actions were "OK" but they are not worthy of any heightened media attention or poutrage.

This story has only become noteworthy due to the media's fixation with blowing things out of proportion because, evidently, if it's not OMG-OUTRAGEOUS!!1!1 then it's clearly not news. What I find crazy is that this news is "worthy of outrage" and the officer needs fired however when SWAT raids the wrong house, kicks in the door, shoots the family pet, and then holds the family at gun-point for an hour it's just a mistake... nothing to see here people. No one need reprimanded, just move along people.
America is so fucked up it's sad.
