A newspaper front page hit me like a sledgehammer. Yep, you guessed it, Haiti.
Full-page shot of a father, seemingly in his forties, holding a dead child. Probably 2. Crying uncontrollably.

I feel like shit. I'm at work, and the waterworks are this close to break out in earnest.

I donated $100 more to Direct Relief International.

But I still feel like shit.

2. Oh my god this is awful.
And given how concentrated the earthquake is, even the best buildings couldn't've lasted. The devastation was immense and I mourn the untold loss of human life, in addition to the massive property damage.

News reports are saying that society itself has crumbled.

3. and yet, I always wonder, why dont we see those same images from Afghanistan?
they are happening all the time. the media chooses to use its resources to show Haiti, but when we bomb weddings and kill civilians we arent allowed to see that? sounds like a blackout to me concerning these occupations
and hugs.

4. Last night I was trying to explain to my daughter...
what it means for an entire city to be reduced to rubble. She's too young for me to dwell on the fact that the people were all still inside. I can hardly explain it to myself.

Thirty times the human destruction as 9/11, and that is just the first 48 hours.

5. What hit me is how easily they can show the dead
bearing in mind how they hid the American victims of Bushco's wars.

6. Showing victims of our wars raises... awkward questions.
Couldn't have that.

7. It's OK. Seeing something like this, you're not supposed to feel good.
If just donating $100 could make you feel all better, there'd probably be something wrong with you.

I guess the only thing you can do is try not to cry at work.

Me, I try not to let the full awfulness of it kick in for me. I know, it sounds horrible. But it's like I need to be able to do that to a certain extent or I won't be able to do anything at all but dwell on that.
