Gay marriage generates millions, expert tells court

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Legalizing same-sex marriage would generate millions of dollars for San Francisco, the city's chief economist said Thursday, as a trial on California's gay wedding ban entered a fourth day.

Edmund Egan, who directs San Francisco's Office of Economic Analysis, said legalization of same-sex marriage would increase the intake of real estate, payroll and sales taxes and would slash the number of uninsured.

Testifying at a landmark federal trial which ultimately could seal the fate of same-sex marriage in the United States, Egan said legalizing gay marriage would also boost real estate values and increase school-district revenues.

Further, because married people amass more wealth than unmarried individuals, they are likely to spend more, spurring sectors of the economy.

Maybe if the corporations and politicians (government) see dollar signs, they'll help get civil rights for all passed. Taking away rights is not in their best fiscal interest. They need to know that. They chase $$$. Maybe showing them the $$$ they are missing will make them do the right thing. It's sad, but true. It might be the only way to get our government to do the right thing. I'll take it. It will certainly work better than trying to appeal to their sense of right and wrong when it comes to civil rights.

4. In 2008, a study by UCLA showed that same-sex marriage generated $100 million for Massachusetts

Kudos to Mr. Egan for making a compelling economic case for same-sex marriage rights.
