Charities -- Doctors Without Borders is among the best of the best |
|
Most who can afford to make charitable contributions to Haiti would really like to know that their donations are being put to the best possible use.
Doctors Without Borders is right at the top of my list and here's why.
During Hurricane Katrina, I donated what I could to Doctors Without Borders. I sent what I could afford on two separate occasions. A few days after making the second donation, I received an email from them requesting that I do not send any more. I don't remember the exact wording, but the gist of it was that they were using all the funds they had received and could not put additional money to good use. They had all the doctors and supplies they could handle at the time, and they suggested that contributions be made to other worthwhile charities.
Now that's mind blowing.
I can still remember my reaction to that email. I knew that they had put every cent they'd received to do exactly what it was intended for. And having reached the full extent of their resources, they weren't looking for anything more to "get a jump" on the next disaster. It's not the way they work. They request funds only when needed and stop asking when they've got it covered.
I know they are currently in Haiti doing everything they can, given the horrendous circumstances. If you want to help the people of Haiti, please consider making a donation to Doctors Without Borders.

experience with them. I donated for tsunami relief, and three months later, I received a letter explaining that they were grateful, but that the money wasn't needed for tsunami relief anymore. They offered to refund the money if I'd like or if I didn't mind, they wanted to direct contributions to needs in Africa.

10. After looking it over, this is where my husband and I donated-- |

because of the lack of medical facilities and the sheer number of casualties, I think medical care is among the most pertinent needs.

The latter because I owe some Mennonites in NM a favor from 25 years ago that I can never repay in a dozen lifetimes.

And even though I can't quite make it from paycheck to paycheck I can't stop giving that one donation. Over the years small donations add up.

25. donated 20. If all the celebs I can think of who have 100+million to their names donated the |
|
percentage of money, that $20 is of my total wealth (LOL, wealth!), then there'd be 10 billion donated by celebs in a day!
I hope my little bit helps one person get better!

27. And don't forget their Nobel Peace Prize! |
|
IIRC, the only charity that has ever won a Nobel.
I have donated to them in the past, but this time I gave to "Feed My Starving Children": www.fmsc.org
They were also in Haiti before the quake, and their warehouse survived the quake. They are currently giving food to the desperate survivors.
There are many worthy NGOs out there, there was a thread with a pretty comprehensive list of orgs in Haiti. I think I'll give that thread another bump.

I donated to them yesterday. Their Canadian site was so inundated with donations it took until yesterday afternoon before I could get on to donate and that is a VERY good sign.
I chose them for my donations for Katrina relief as well after reading and hearing about them.
Recommended.

34. Done. Did it yesterday. |
|
I'm retired on a very low income, but when I saw those heart-breaking pictures I knew I had to contribute something. I can live on ramen noodles for a week, but those people in Haiti have nothing.
Do it, people. Let's show the world that Americans are better than the godawful image we allowed the last President to inflict on us.
