Borders To ''Liquidate'' Unsold WaldenBooks It Can't Sell
Stop Borders from Trashing Thousands of Unsold Books

Books in a dumpster behind Strand in Union Square.

Borders’ recent acquisition of Waldenbooks may result in thousands of books ending up in the dumpster. In response to ‘Big Box Waste and What We Can Do About It‘, tipster Heather L. let us know about another shameful case of corporate waste from Borders, who owns the chain Waldenbooks. Waldenbooks is closing its 200 locations at the end of this month, and employees are saying that the company plans to destroy and trash any books that they can’t liquidate.

Heather writes:

Contrast H&M’s quick reaction and public promise to donate unsold merchandise to that of Borders, who were recently outed by their own employees as planning to trash tens of thousands of unsold books after 200 Waldenbooks locations shut down by the end of January.

After more than a month, Borders is still dragging its feet, trying to stonewall the issue until the store closings are over, and refusing to pledge to donate any of the books scheduled to be destroyed. In fact, contrary to their public statements, they’ve instructed their employees to keep trashing books, but to hide the evidence by shipping the books and their torn off covers back to distribution centers in separate boxes, away from prying eyes who might find the evidence in store dumpsters! Shocking, right?

The company’s response to letters begging them to recycle the books is that they are using a third party company to liquidate and “do not expect to have any remaining product to donate” once that’s done. I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t buy it. No books left? At all? Even if each store trashed only ten books, that’s thousands of perfectly usable books that could have gone to schools or libraries!

If you want to give Borders a piece of your mind, you might http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=221726111069&topic=13837">write a letter to Borders or try contacting http://www.greatamerican.com/contact_us/contact_us.aspx">Great American Group, LLC, the company they’ve hired to liquidate. We could take a page from the H&M scandal and http://www.facebook.com/search/?q=borders+books&init=quick#/Borders?ref=search&sid=720193727.3956004319..1">leave comments on Borders’ Facebook page. - Well, I'm relatively certain history will be repeating itself here. Because in all likelihood the future owners of Borders Books will be just as hardhearted when they have to get rid of the last of Border's crap.

And oh yes, the day is coming Borders. It's coming for you too.......

3. What is worse....
...they are throwing away a wonderful opportunity to be seen as a "warm and fuzzy corporation" by giving the books to libraries and schools and trashing themselves and cutting off their own cajones with the only group that could possibly save them: young readers.

- The corporations of today are run by a bunch of fucking clueless dopes.

2. Waldenbooks is closing? That sucks.
There sci-fi/gaming section is actually better than many larger chain stores.

4. Tossing out books in the trash is nothing new.
When I worked at Borders five years ago, boxes of overstock paperbacks went in the trash every week. It was cheaper to throw them away than send them back.

6. Other posters to the article's site....
...who also worked for Borders said the same.

- The people running this so-called "business" sound like a bunch of dumb jerks if you ask me.

8. I've worked for Borders and Crown.
This is a standard practice--the covers are mailed back to get the refund for the non-sale of the books. That said, I think it's a stupid practice and I can't see why the bar code couldn't be scanned and the book cover "clipped" like they do for used CDs in record stores. It's a horrible waste of books.

11. Unfortunately....
...such ideals are in-keeping with the American business form. Where one can be too big to fail. And where waste is okay if it makes you a profit. Even if in so doing, it empties your soul until one is a hollowed-out bag of skin. With nothing of value left inside.

- Hey, I think I just described the CEO of Goldman, Sachs.

10. Borders
Is no better than grocers who pour ammonia in dumpsters to keep the poor on the street from taking 2 day old still edible produce for"free".

Profit is really theft. Capitalism is nothing but greed and by not sharing surplus waste is used to feed greed again.Destroying to deliberately create an illusion of scarcity.Deliberate manufacture of a'need' so asshole pigs can profit again from selling to fill this 'need'.A need they created by destroying and not donating or sharing the surplus..For if they SHARE they get nothing extra back (profit) for it.So they destroy.

Maybe it is time to realize the GREEDY create the NEEDY and being profit greedy is in reality evil and a sociopathic way to be and it is wrong. Fuck you, borders you fucking pigs.I wish the Borders Ceo a future of poverty and scarcity .I want the executives of borders to live in poverty and face exploitation done to them, equal to the scarcity and exploitation that borders greed for profits has cost other people(schools etc.) and this planet to suffer.

14. Well said.
But as I've repeated more than once to others here of late, I think we'd have to come down a lot further before people would finally realize that they've been had. And even then I'm still not sure they'd do what is required to correct these problems.

Because we've been shown just how poorly educated that a considerable portion of our society truly is with the teabagger demonstrations. So we know that many people can't even read that well. And when one couples that to the fact that they've been http://www.amazon.com/Lies-My-Teacher-Told-Everything/dp/0684818868">lied to for so long, it's questionable if they'd believe the truth. Many are at least aware now that something's wrong -- but they're ?t=1263538092">pointing in the wrong directions most of the time.

- And yet here I still have my fingers crossed. I suppose that makes me an optimist.
