National reaction to story about woman whose car was taken by repo.w/2yr old son inside

Strangers from around the country are stepping forward to help a San Jose woman whose car was repossessed this week as her toddler slept in the back seat.

More than two dozen people, including someone from Michigan, e-mailed or called the Mercury News on Thursday in response to a story about Isabel Luevano, and pledged to try to help the 26-year-old single mother of three get her 2000 green Honda Accord back.

"The story just touched my heart," said Patrick Amador, 48, a small San Jose businessman who has five children and planned to walk into Luevano's office Thursday and hand her $50. "My kids struggle. I got a little extra money, and my priest tells us when we see someone who needs help, we should help."

Luevano's car was repossessed Tuesday evening as she picked up her 6-year-old daughter on Park Avenue at Hedding Street in San Jose. Her 2-year-old son, Cyrus, was asleep in the back seat of the car. She had left the car running and was standing a few feet away from the Honda when suddenly a stranger, who turned out to be the repo man, jumped into her car and took it back to Alberto's Auto Sales on East Santa Clara Street in San Jose.

There was some snark in the thread. But what a terrible ordeal for a mother!

Seventeen days late and they take her car? They could have tried to work out something with her. She is employed, and trying to make her own way, with a small child.

I am glad people want to help. I hope she gets enough donations to send her son to college!
