In moments of tragedy, people reveal who they are and what they believe in.
Case in point would be Mr Limbaugh. When horror struck, he turned to his personal faith, his religion in a sense. While millions of Americans are responding with donations to Haitian relief causes, he practices his religion of Bashing Democrats. This is his form of religion; it's what he believes in. It reminded me of the reactions to 9/11 -- while many went to church in the days right after, I recall Ann Coulter devoting time and space in her article about the death of her friend in one of the planes that terrible day to attacking the Clintons' marriage. It's what sustained her as much as Pat Robertson's inevitable response reveals his belief in the Vindictive God of Cheapshot Revenge.

How you react to bad news says everything about you.

1. Mr. Anal Cyst's religion is hatred.
Hatred, greed, selfishness, cruelty, and stupidity.

Ditto for Pat Robertson, the devil incarnate.

3. I remember in the wake of Katrina, many liberal web-sites
were raising money to help the vicitms, while Moveon.org set up a database for people to offer housing, which had a huge response (I remember noting that there were more offers of housing there than FEMA was able to provide!). Conservative web-sites on the other hand, didn't appear to be doing anything; I think I found one with a link to the Red Corss or something.

4. Most Democratic Congresspeople have issued condolences, few Republicans have
NPR was pointing this out this morning, so I expect a few late arrival statements from Republicans in the coming days--four days after the tragedy occurred.

Hmmm, four days to issue a response...

6. Just out of curiosity, I've been checking in on the freepers to see what their
response has been and it's really disappointing. There are some who have donated and are urging others to do the same, but there has been a lot more discussion about Rush's remarks and the fact that money sent for aid will probably wind up lining the pockets of politicians. Some of the remarks are truly disgusting.

7. There's two kinds of looters: those feeding their family & those robbing from other starving folks
It's sad that there's only one word for describing people with essentially opposite motives.

I had never thought of it those terms, but you're absolutely right. What a profound assessment!

10. I've also found people's lack of comment to speak volumes as well
When people are more concerned about Conan vs. Jay, you know there's a problem. I've posted news, information, and other material on my Facebook and Blog since this happened. A good portion are just too enthralled with the late night tv wars to take notice. Some even sent messages about "Why are we helping them?" or "Great, I'm taxed enough already".

In fairness though, a lot of people sent comments or thanks for the information. Some even donated because of my incessant nagging and revealing information about the situation.

11. Yes, people's reaction tells a great deal.
If a person lacks a sense of compassion and desire to help in a situation of desperate need - see Haiti -, I know that this is someone I will have trouble viewing as a friend and companion. Not necessarily because I'm afraid they won't be there for me should problems arise, but because it's like we're talking to each other in foreign languages from the get-go. There's no common ground.
