This morning I think I heard Nora O'Donnell say that 45% of Haiti's population
is children. Did anyone else catch that? 45%. All the more reason to help this nation, which like so many others that were ravaged by civil wars and coups, are left to learn a way forward from scratch.

1. 100% are people.
No need to quantify it.

2. 45% ain't bad at all.
Where the civil wars have been raging for years, it's more like 85% under 18. In those places, the natural end of puberty is death.

3. Haiti is the population of NYC
in an area about the size of Maryland. It's an astonishing catastrophe.

And I really get annoyed with people who say that 9 million people should just all go back to farming. Would they say Maryland should just all go back to farming? The answer is labor rights, not try to create 4 or 5 million farms.

4. Creating millions of farms is what got Haiti denuded of trees. All those people trying to make a
living off poor land started the problems.

5. Every other Caribbean nation is wealthy from tourism. Why not Haiti?
