A figment of Ayn Rand's imagination. |

Objectivism sounds great - on paper.
Never panned out in reality.
Go ask Alan Greenspan, Ayn Rand's best friend.

Does anyone attack the Magnificent Middle for being Reagan Democrat/Republican Lite zombies who were asleep at the switch while their nation was being dismantled around them?

But you probably will.
I'm one of those terrible left-wingers that have become notoriously unpopular with a certain mind-set on DU. I am a progressive democrat, well to the left of liberal democrats. Thus, while I have some things in common with moderate democrats, and a few with conservative democrats -- who tend to view themselves as "centrists."
Being at the center of an error in thinking, or being at the center of a cruel and immoral system, may hold a certain attraction for some. I tend to view this as a symptom of herd mentality. I do not feel any compulsion to bump shoulders with a crowd. If I am convinced that my position is correct, and that 99 others are wrong, I believe that I have both a moral and ethical obligation to advocate for my position -- by any means necessary, as Malcolm used to say.
King noted that social progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes only through the hard work and dedication of those few, usually starting from a position outside that centrist mainstream, with the courage of their convictions, and a willingness to fight the Good Fight. There are a number of DUers who subscribe to that belief, and who are thus called "ultra left wingers," etc, by some others who are promoting another agenda on this forum. I think that they are the cream of the crop here.

Thank you.
Since I have been accused by that one of "pissing and moaning," I will share: yes, I'm tired of hearing it too, because no one listens, the "centrists" or whatever they call themselves go along with the herd, we all get screwed and they still don't have the sense to realize that they were WARNED ahead of time.
"If I am convinced that my position is correct, and that 99 others are wrong, I believe that I have both a moral and ethical obligation to advocate for my position -- by any means necessary, as Malcolm used to say."
My position is validated by being -- unfortunately, becoming -- correct as long term events have followed their foreseeable outcomes. The ''middle" want to continue to insult and blame anyone who tries to pull their head out of the sand.
Un/fortunately, I now know that it won't change, history will repeat. The comfy, self congratulatory middle will always allow the hard won community progress of the "extremists" to be undone ... and blame them for that too.
And now we're supposed to get excited about some new effort to get organized and do something about the mess the lemmings have left us? :eyes:
As for this imaginary shifting line marking left/mid/center/whatever: these folks can't figure out that three decades of Reagan Republicans and Dem Lites is what has destroyed the nation?

If the Democrats lose the seat, I blame the centrists. It is completely and utterly their fault, for their contempt of the liberal voter base in Massachusetts, for their arrogance in thinking liberals should be shitted on, told to be DLC bitches, and just take it. Screw the DLC, screw the Blue Dogs, and Screw Rahm Emmanuel. I'd rather deal with Republicans who try to stab you from the front, than centrist Democrats who try to stab us in the back.

Although I prefered Mike Capuano, he didn't have much name recognition outside the area near his congressional district. Coakley had already won statewide election twice as attorney general. The other two candidates were virtual unknowns with no political experience or recognition.
