Give to one of the good charities, not the S.A., they are very anti-Gay to the point of lobbying
against Gay rights, and worked with the B*sh Admin. to make it easy to eradicate Gays from gov't funded operations.

I would find ANY other charity to give to, and there are others with much better than the return you get when you give them money, and then have to wonder if it's going to be used like it was when the worked back door with George B*sh's administration.

From John Aravosis' article ---

http://gay.americablog.com/2009/12/salvation-army-is-nasty-anti-gay.html

SALVATION ARMY TRIED TO OVERRULE LOCAL GAY RIGHTS LAWS

A Washington Post front-page expose two years ago revealed that the Salvation Army tried to broker a backroom deal with the Bush Administration to overrule state and local laws banning anti-gay discrimination in the workplace. Here's an excerpt from the Post article:

"The Bush administration is working with the nation's largest charity, the Salvation Army, to make it easier for government-funded religious groups to practice hiring discrimination against gay people, according to an internal Salvation Army document.... George Hood, a senior official with the Salvation Army, said the group never discriminates in delivering its services, but on the question of hiring gay employees, 'it really begins to chew away at he theological fabric of who we are.'"- Washington Post, 7/10/2001. You can read the entire Wash Post story here.

And here are a few beauts from the Salvation Army's various Web sites around the world:

"Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life. There is no scriptural support for same-sex unions as equal to, or as an alternative to, heterosexual marriage." - Salvation Army USA Web site, Dec. 2003

" as rebellion against God's plan for the created order.... Homosexual practice, however, is, in the light of Scripture, clearly unacceptable. Such activity is chosen behaviour and is thus a matter of the will. It is therefore able to be directed or restrained in the same way heterosexual urges are controlled. Homosexual practice would render any person ineligible for full membership (soldiership) in the Army." - Salvation Army Australia Web site (emphasis added)

2. Not to mention I blame them partially for having my car stolen!
Edited on Fri Jan-15-10 08:20 PM by cascadiance
I don't donate to them any more!

I tried to donate a couch to them and left outside my garage one day for them to pick up. They didn't pick it up (since they were too picky to take it), so I put it in my garage (had no room for it any place else) until Goodwill could come by for it later. That night while I had to park my car in the driveway instead of the garage, it was stolen! No, it wasn't directly their fault, but had I called Goodwill to start with, I'd still have had my car then.

6. their pickiness with your donation though set the wheels in motion.
I have an aunt who was deeply involved with them. She's anti-Gay imo, so it's fitting that she was a lifer with them. When I read the article about them and their lobbying against Gay people, I though, how could ANYONE who is open-minded give to such a nasty group. They lobby against rights!

There's a whole bunch of other charities that are much higher rated than they are to give to. Thanks for your post.

3. Yep, I walk right by those bell-ringers.
I feel bad for them standing out in the cold, but I won't give them a dime. I wish I could tell them why, but I'm not interested in a discussion about this. My mind is made up. Until they change their anti-gay policies, not a penny from me.

8. thank you! I actually walk by some of them smile and wish them a Merry Christmas and say
if the "Army" was for equal rights for all I'd donate. But, I believe many of them aren't affiliated with the "Army", they're just hired for the season. So, I'm glad they have a job, but I'm glad to tell them in an off the cuff remark that the Salvation Army is very hostile to GLBT people. I've had one excellent discussion with a lady about it. Made me happy to inform her.

4. I refuse to give them money after their cozying up to W so they wouldn't
have to hire gay people. There are LOTS of charities out there. No need to support bigots.

7. Thank you for saying this - I've been yelled at for repeatedly saying this every year to people,
because I know everyone does not know this. I used to love the SA, til I found out their horribly anti-Gay, and I mean RABIDLY so.

I believe in salvation for all, not just the straight! They're sick to actively lobby against Gay rights. And, as I said in another post, my aunt worked for them, and she is anti-Gay imo, and it makes sense now.

13. The SA i actually will donate to, they are one organisation i actually see on a dailly basis on the
street, same as the church groups with the soup kitchens, i overlook any disagreements i may have with them on any particular issue as i see the difference they make within my community...

if you count taking basic Civil Rights away - you know things like having your family recognized by your own government. They have done wonders there.
