Head of United Methodist Church's International Relief Programs Dies in Haiti After Being Rescued

Sam Dixon was head of the United Methodist Church's international relief programs (called UMCOR). He was in Haiti holding meetings on relief programs when the earthquake hit. He was rescued after being under debris for 55 hours, but later passed away from injuries.

4 other relief officials who were trapped with him under the debris were rescued and survived.

I'm Methodist & had used UMCOR as my venue of donating to the Haiti earthquake disaster, as I knew that all of the money would go to the designated project and I realized that the Methodist church was already established as a source for help in Haiti. However; I knew nothing of this news until now. That is heartbreaking, along with the majority of the news coming from Haiti. Such terrible suffering.

6. The initial reports were that he was rescued

It was particularly disheartening because the initial report on Friday was that he was rescued. the latest press release says he died of his injuries while awaiting rescue.

From the linked article he sounds like the kind of person the world would need more of,
especially in times of crisis.
No matter one's philosophical position on life and death, a legacy like this cut short
by disaster is a sad detail in the distressing situation on Haiti. :cry:
My heart goes out to his family and the people in need depending on work like his to be
continued.
