Hundreds greet Brown in Hyannis

January 17, 2010

HYANNIS — The red, white and blue signs. Chants of "Yes We Can." People of all ages and races clamoring for one glance at the candidate.

It was state Sen. Scott Brown — not President Barack Obama — who received the rock star treatment yesterday in Hyannis, as several hundred supporters lined Main Street to cheer the Republican hopeful for the U.S. Senate on to victory against state Attorney General Martha Coakley.

The hefty turnout surprised some people, including police officers, as Main Street was down to one lane in spots and Brown supporters crowded in the street caused frequent traffic backups.

The crowd began forming around 1 p.m. and waited for almost two hours before Brown arrived, as the car horns continually honked in support of the Wrentham resident.

"This shows that people are tired of the same old, same old," said Priscilla Olson of West Dennis. "It sends the message that the ordinary citizen on the street is sick and tired of the political rhetoric."

People in the crowd were energized, shouting out "And this is the bluest state in the union," and "This is the start of a true revolution."

7. Probably well heeled retirees from the outer Cape
People who retire to the Cape are generally upper middle class and extremely conservative.

People who live there year round and do all the work are not, but they're outnumbered.

10. From the Outer Cape?
The sparsely populated towns of Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown are not the place to look for conservative
wealthy retirees. These are more likely to be found in the fancy mansions of Osterville, Dennis, Brewster, etc. of the
inner Cape.

Even so, to see such a phenomenon in Hyannis at all is appalling. But Hyannis is less than an hour's drive from the
mainland, and it wouldn't surprise me to hear that some bussing in of off-Cape people occurred to beef up the numbers.

5. It's a pretty small place, plus being there, any number is surprising.

3. Yikes, that's scary
People chanting "This is the start of a true revolution"? In Ted Kennedy's state?

Something is very, very wrong here.

6. The CCTimes has been pimping for Brown, and they're locals in the pics.

People are angry around here, and the Dems in Boston and DC had better start paying attention.

My across the road neighbor was up there, and came home with Brown campaign sign, which is now planted on his front lawn.

funny, the only face of color i see is either a police officer or possibly brown's driver, judging by the cap.
