This is one strange article from the NYT about Pres Obama's speech today
Since I missed it, I was looking for a transcript - which I still haven't found, so if you have one I would be grateful.

Anyway, I stumbled across this weird commentary from the NYT, especially one particular paragraph

Obama Takes to the Pulpit
By HELENE COOPER

Mr. Obama’s address was noteworthy because he has rarely been to church since he was elected. In addition, after the furor over sermons delivered by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, during the campaign, Mr. Obama spoke to a black congregation in honor of Martin Luther King Day.

The author thinks President Obama's address was noteworthy because he has "rarely been to church since he was elected"? Then the beyond belief next sentence. Try to parse it. Try to make sense of it as written.

In addition, after the furor over sermons delivered by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, during the campaign, Mr. Obama spoke to a black congregation in honor of Martin Luther King Day.

1. In addition (to what?)
2. after the furor over sermons delivered by his former pastor, the Rev. Jermiah Wright (hotlinked), during the campaign
3. Mr. Obama spoke to a black congregation in honor of Martin Luther King Day

It almost sounds like the writer is saying "Obama has a lot of nerve speaking to a black congregation on Martin Luther King Day after all the furor over his old pastor's sermons." What point is being made?

1. Throwing shit up against a wall making something stick.
It doesn't have to make sense or be logical or relevan.

3. This is the New York effing Times!!!
Shouldn't their writers be able to make a coherent point and write a sentence that makes sense?

4. NY Times?
The author will be looking for work soon since the paper is doomed to extinction. Their inability to write a coherent sentence may be a factor in getting another job....

ya never know. ;)

7. It is The Caucus "The Politics and Government Blog of the New York Times"
It is their Official blog published on their website. The format does not excuse the lack of writing ability or coherence.

8. How many times did the Reagan's go to church. How many times did Pappa Bush went
to church. Believe me that doesn't make you a saint. Look at Clinton who went to church and Bush who went to church. Going to church doesn't make it them saints.

11. I object strongly to the rampant snarkiness of the first sentence I quoted
"noteworthy" because he has rarely been to church since elected!!

You are completely correct that church attendence is irrelevant in judging Presidential performance.

And then trying to dredge up Jeremiah Wright solely on the basis that the President spoke in a church -
Church+Obama=Reverend Wright!

9. he forgot to say "cocaine" in that sentence.
looks like he's trying to get as much slander as possible in one sentence.

See, he really is from Kenya.

12. Translation: it's admirable when white presidents attend black churches
But Obama is just dredging up divisive reminders of how "black" he is if he does. He should act more white. It calms our nerves.

Arghhh.
