I just spent 2 hours calling 110 democrats and undecideds in Mass this afternoon
Results: 30 voice mails, one Brown vote, the rest for Coakley. Three undecideds listened when I said "Do it for Teddy." Two of us got all weepy and promised one another we'd put aside our anger and vote for Ted.

I also heard that Congressman John Tierney said the visibilities we are seeing are one big group that moves around the state and that they are busing them in. We all learned from the Obama campaign that signs mean nothing. We're mobilized here. There were 8 people in my small town making calls today. Tomorrow we do it again.

Based on the positive responses from todays calls, I sincerely believe we will win this. There are more of us than them.

25. And I hope to hell that Coakley remembers that if and win she takes her seat.
Some of us are damned sick of giving our all, and having it thrown off a cliff when it becomes convenient to do so.

There is a lesson to be learned here.

Longtime TPM Reader FC checks in ...
From West Roxbury & Hyde Park

An update from someone working the past 2 days in suburbs around Boston and the high-turnout neighborhoods of West Roxbury and Hyde Park.

There has been a huge uptick in activity by Coakley supporters over the past 48 hours, especially grassroots progressive groups and the well-oiled, disciplined and certain-to-vote unions who came out big for Coakley in the primary: SEIU has quietly conducted numerous GOTV-prep sessions numbering several hundred volunteers each; teachers in Brookline, Newton and Watertown conducted day-long phone banks and canvassing; pro-choice womens' groups (including a large contingent of nurses) have been running an intensive outreach to female voters.

I've also been receiving a deluge of emails and text messages from individuals and groups who have been quiet since the primary, all urging me to vote, volunteer, etc. My sense is that the progressive majority here has simply been procrastinating on this, the fourth election since October, and are now clicking into action.

TPM Reader PM reports from Somerville ...

19. When you say democrats are you talking about registered democrats?
Or are you including some people registered as indys but who normally vote with the party? I ask because the independents out number us and wouldnt they be a more important call in the late stages?

Or can we do it with just dems alone?

28. I have no way of knowing if I talked with dems or indies.
I was just told that's who we were calling. I'm assuming the undecideds were indies who were leaning toward Coakley.

23. That's great, but you need to remember the lists you were working from
were already people who had been marked as "pluses" (or whatever system the campaign has been using for voter ID)--Democrats or Independents who had either already committed support or who had voted for the Democrat in past elections.

So you weren't likely to get many Brown voters. You weren't doing voter ID. You were trying to get probable supporters to the polls.

29. I thought more dems would be negative and against Coakley
We have more dems than republicans, so we need to get those people out to vote. I have no idea who I called today as it was autodial but the majority were going for Coakley. I am hoping there were lots of indies included in those calls.

78. I'm not,
Quite the opposite, I have no doubt that they're accurate.

But then I look around DU and see a bunch of smug motherfuckers puffing out over Brown's numbers and proclaiming htat democrats "deserve" to lose, and assorted shit in that vein.

Most of the country is backing the Democrats, both on a state and national level. DU... not so much.

I think Browns numbers are inflated by the media and others in order to discourage Dem voters. The media is worthless.

153. The media is heavily
in the Brown camp pocket (or vice versa). His wife is a long time popular Boston news reporter. His daughter is a beautiful "idolized" American Idol singing star and Boston College basketball star--brings in a lot of young voters. Media in Boston/Massachusetts is a pretty incestuous (in the nonsexual sense) crowd. The Romney machine trashed and hounded his predecessor Jane Swift by using every aspect of the Massachusetts media to make her look like a fool -- paving the way for Romney.

79. Thank you from Texas
Thank you so much for your work. I loved how you asked people to do it for Teddy.

In places like here in the south, it is sickening how much hate there is for a family who gave all of their sons in service to America.

A loss will give the teabaggers so much joy it literally makes me sick at my stomach to think about it.

Not only would they be glowing over the loss of Ted's seat, along with increased chances of losing a HC bill (though not perfect, we have to get it passed), but they will use it to further their attacks on Obama.

I pray the good people of Mass will realize the national importance of their vote.

I haven't logged in DU for quite a while, but gd, this is so very important.

I've phone banked in my own state and the GOTV effort is limited to people registered as Democrats. Our lists are of people who have identified themselves in the primary as Ds. Is it different in Mass? Do you get to call anyone who has ever voted, or anyone in the state? Just curious as it seems we could do better here and I'm wondering how others do this.

138. Right Wing Unity
Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 11:48 AM by Mark D.
That's what we're up against. I live in Mass, I'm doing what I can too. But there is unity on the right, they'll all vote for Brown (well, a few will vote for the Libertarian). We don't have that spirit and we need it. Democrats who vote for Brown should be ashamed, and they should not stay home and literally give Teddy the finger up in Heaven for all of his hard work...to have the seat he held get handed to that corporate prostitute Scott Brown. Even the right wingers need to be called on this. He supports the continued reward of companies to export our jobs overseas. His Democratic opponent does not. When they try to question your 'patriotism' ask them why they hate Americans.

Watch their head spin as you use their common phrases against them. I'm one of the liberals who opposes what's left of the once promising health care reform. What will pass will appear to have no public option, and no protection for those with pre-existing conditions. But I won't let one bill hand this seat over to that idiot Brown. If Mass can't keep a long-standing, important, Democratic seat in Democratic hands, given how we're supposedly a 'liberal' state, how the hell can we keep many seats nationwide. Especially in states that are considered more 'red'. This is a bellwether for the possible future problems we have. While Martha's not perfect, she's still far better than Scott Brown for it.

Coakley made this close by doing virtually nothing for quite awhile after she got the nod to run.

What gives me pause is this - now that it's close will the Diebold folks just flip a few votes if needed? It would hardly be the first time if they do that, I have no doubt Kerry really won in 2004 and that Cleland in reality got the votes to keep his seat, and there are more curious results than these two. That so many states use this unverifiable computer system amazes me, it's some combination of stupidity and graft. Like old Joe Stalin said, the power is not with the people who vote, but rather with the people who count those votes.
