News: $4,400/Yr. Coders May Work On Dept. of Labor Project
http://news.slashdot.org/story/10/01/15/153206/4400Yr-Coders-May-Work-On-Dept-of-Labor-Project?from=rss

"To power the Tools for America's Job Seekers Challenge, the US Department of Labor tapped IdeaScale, a subsidiary of Survey Analytics, which is headquartered in Seattle with satellite offices in Nasik, India and Auckland, NZ (PDF). According to the Federal Register (PDF), an Emergency OMB Review was requested to launch the joint initiative of the DOL, White House, and IdeaScale to help out unemployed US workers. A cached Monster.com ad seeks candidates to work on the development and maintenance of ideascale.com, but in India at an annual salary of Rs. 200,000 to 300,000 ($4,4000 to $6,600 US). BTW, an earlier White House-sponsored, IdeaScale-powered Open Government Brainstorm identified legalizing marijuana as one of the best ways to 'strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness.'"

F*CK THAT.

Soon the only work in this country will be menial labour which can't be outsourced. HIRE AMERICANS to do the coding.

17. No
we hired a Seattle company that has many more clients than the US Government, and they are outsourcing. Nothing in what was posted above says that they're being hired for the DOL project and for all we know they're hiring them for clients in India.

The founder of the company was born in India, but I believe he is a citizen of this country now. He lives in and his business (SurveyAnalytics) is in Seattle.

SurveyAnalytics created QuestionPro, Ideascale, Micropoll and some others.

I don't know why anyone takes everything at face value, the person who posted that at slashdot is obviously trying to outrage right-wingers with the little tidbit about legalizing marijuana.

18. But it isn't even true.
The whole thing is bullshit if anyone would follow the links, they would know that. Sheesh is right! This place is a freaking joke anymore.

The company is a Seattle headquartered company, that has an office in India and NZ. The founder is Indian-American. He has more clients than just the government. The monster ad was not for the Dept. of Labor or the project that Ideascale was hired to do. We don't know what it's for, but it is from October which is one month before the DOL even submitted it's request to the OMB.

19. Good advice, I hardly ever follow the links and end up making knee-jerk
reactions -- the same thing I "accuse" others of. I stand chastised.

16. That Monster ad doesn't mean
what you/they think it does.

Ideascale.com & QuestionPro are not only used by the government, and that ad doesn't say squat about them looking for workers for the DOL.

This is what the Monster ad says:

About Company

QuestionPro.com is a leading provider of online survey software. Please visit our site at http://www.questionpro.com for more information.

Job Description

Development work related to online application based websites (i.e. Software as a Service (SAAS) model).

Candidate must have 2-3 years working experience with the following technologies :
Java, JSP, Struts, Hibernate, MySQL, Linux, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Apache Web Server, VI or Emacs (Linux text editors)

We are currently looking for candidates who can work on development / maintenance of the following sites :

http://www.questionpro.com
http://www.micropoll.com
http://www.ideascale.com
http://www.surveyconsole.com

Pay Scale : Rs. 2,00,000 - 3,00,000 / Year – Depends upon candidates experience

It sucks that a company that we hired outsources, but that does not mean that they will be outsourcing the work they do for the government.

20. Seems a bit disingenuous to me. "It's unfortunate the company we hired outsources, but they did
submit the best bid."

There's a lot of corps that outsource their responsibility that way. It's not their fault, it's the fault of the company they hired.

If it were important, they wouldn't have hired that company though, would they?

23. Actually,
after reading more about the company, I don't know if I would categorize it as outsourcing now. They're headquartered here, and they have offices in New Zealand and India.

Again, there is nothing in any of what was posted that says coders from India will be contracted for work on the DOL jobs project, other than what some guy at slashdot was trying to allude to with an old Monster.com job listing.

24. It's an outdated
job listing for the companies office in India. The job listing was from before the DOL project was even submitted to OMB for approval.
