Does Danny Glover neutralize Pat Robertson--game even?
I was thinking "yes", because even though Glover's done some great acting, he seems to have just gone crazy (too much time spent with Mel Gibson?). On the other hand, even the most fundie fundies snorted milk through their noses at Pat Robertson's crazy talk. People still kind of take Glover seriously. So maybe it's still game on.

1. If you are eluding to his point that climate change is a major factor of earthquakes
then there is no competition. Glover is right, Robertson is wrong and vile.

2. Glover may be right but he's crazy,

and is a silly spokesperson to boot. Robertson is definitely wrong, and is a terrible spokesperson, but I don't think the man is vile.

It's a great country! Crazy and silly and terrible right out there with intelligent, wise, and thoughtful. We get to choose.

and that Glover is right about this.

but I don't think Robertson's "following" is all that large, or that faithful.

4. i dont know anything about glover and his statement, but falwell has power with his words
over lots and lots of people. there is a responsibility in preaching, dealing with souls and faith, that is a burden for ministers and if they fail, they create a great harm. is wrong. and can be powerful. we see it over and over.

there is no comparison between the two.

9. This is a slander making the rounds of the RW blogs...
Rightwing blog DailyTelegraph seems to have started it all....
http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/timblair/index.php/dailytelegraph/comments/pact_with_gaia

Then Michelle Malkin picked it up...
http://michellemalkin.com/2010/01/15/danny-glover-the-lefts-pat-robertson

For those who want to listen, here's the actual statement:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2ft5JkNWJA

What he says is (paraphrasing):

"We need more than one hospital ship from the US. The other island nations need to take heed because this type of event could happen to them because of Global Warming."

I think it's quite a stretch to claim that Glover therefore thinks that Global Warming causes earthquakes.

18. I think he's just saying 'catastrophies happen' and that with global
climate change, there will be more catastrophies coming - hurricanes, typhoons, floods, wild fires are all climate related, and people cannot respond to them if they are off somewhere else dealing with the earthquakes and volcanoes that will happen anyway, as they have always happened.

Inartfully worded, but sound.

22. Thanks for posting that. Glover is guilty of ambiguous wording at most.
There were even DUers who stubbornly, and I think obstinately, accused Danny Glover of being an idiot.

17. Dear Republican,
Danny was exhorting us to learn from this and prepare for future disasters more fully. Pat was saying black people made a deal with Satan, blaming them for this disaster in the present. There is no comparison in content, at all, nor in rhetorical style. One man is an artist who speaks about people, the other is a 'minister' who claims to speak for God, who claimed this pact with Satan was a fact.
Danny Glover is a good man, Pat Robertson is an evil man. Deal with it.

Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 01:15 PM by theophilus
people would just listen to the conversation they would see this is not true. Mr. Glover might have his shortcomings, who doesn't, but this was not an example. If I hadn't heard this distortion I would have never thought that he was linking GW and EQs. I still don't think he was after listening to the audio and reading the jerkposts to the contrary. Come on people, quit being asinine.

See my Post #9 above. It's a RW slander that multiplied once Michelle Malkin posted it on her blog.

21. Context, please
From the snippet of a quote I saw from Danny Glover, it appeared that he was saying that due to global climate change, ocean levels were rising, and that because of that, the effects of earthquakes, particularly in the Caribbean, might be enhanced for certain coastal regions. However, it's difficult to say exactly what point Glover was trying to make, because the quote attributed to him was so badly truncated as to make it nearly impossible to understand.

Now, why would anyone want to set up some kind of equivalency between Pat Robertson's recorded statement freely offered on his program and a hacked-up version of a quote that can't be substantiated or even deciphered? Is there something else at work here besides someone wanting to ameliorate the odiousness of Robertson's repugnant statement? Inquiring minds would like to know . . .
