100 Democrats in the Senate will not be enough to pass progressive/liberal legislation ..... |

that would challenge the economic and political power of the big financial interests if one popular theory presented on DU is true. I've read some posts written by well intentioned DU'ers justifying the running of "conservative" or "moderate centrists" candidates in so-called Red states. They seem to be endorsing the idea that it's impossible to ever elect 51 Democratic liberals, much less 60 to the Senate, because in order for Democrats to defeat Republicans in "conservative" Red states, they must campaign and vote as conservatives!
If this theory is true, a liberal/progressive Senate that isn't controlled by Wall Street and corporate America can never be elected. We shall forever be at the mercy of Wall Street political whores.
I don't subscribe to that theory.

1. A policician can campaign on whatever and vote the other way |
|
They all do it, so why is it that people keep believing that their candidate will DO what he says in the election cycle? Crazy. OBama? QED. Lieberman? QED. Kucinich? (well, there are exceptions that prove the rule). Go Dennis!

2. Then it's all hopeless, isn't it? |
|
If what you say is true, then we will never make any progress. So, what's your suggestion for a way to govern a diverse country the size of the USA?
Truly, if you think it will be impossible to do the right thing, even in the impossible situation you describe, what hope can you have?
Let's hear your plan...

Like I said, I don't subscribe to that theory.
I do subscribe to the mass movement and action strategy .... the one that helped being about the most progressive and meaningful social/political achievements in American history.
