4. A disappointingly thin margin of victory
A clear indication of the unpopularity of everything the Democrats are proposing or doing. Evidence that Republicans are surging, ready to take back the House, the Senate, and perhaps even the White House in 2010.

Okay, maybe I'm kidding on that last point. Just a little bit. But don't be surprised when it all the rest gets said by some talking chucklehead or other in the next five days.

5. They won't spin it as a win, they will spin it as a loss...
because 'she should have won it by a gazillion more votes and that just shows the Obama administration is in deep trouble.' Bet on it.

23. No offense intended... but that wouldn't be "spin".
It would be the simple truth.

The closest senate races in decades were the Romney loss to Kennedy by 17% in 1994 and the 8% loss by Weld to Kerry in 1996.

MOST of the MA senate races have been 30%+ blowouts for Democrats.

Yes... anything less than a 10% victory DOES mean that something is very very wrong. Don't know whether it's HCR or Obama, or Democrats in general (or whether any of those things are "too far" or "not far enough")... but something is very wrong.

Unfortunately... this doesn't look like a question that we'll need to worry about... since she's on her way to having to explain a loss... not a narrow win.

26. As I said... I don't expect to need a "head start"
I expect that on Wednesday morning, we'll all be thinking up spin on why this loss doesn't mean anything for November... that it's really a wake up call to get off the can and (insert poster's priorities here).

I can't imagine being happier than I would be if we had to deal with the fallout from a narrow win in a state we should dominate... but I can't pretend that there wouldn't be something legitimate to deal with.

She was up by 30 points just a few weeks ago. If she wins by 2% that's better than a loss... but it still means there is a problem. Pretending otherwise just means that we won't address whatever that problem is. And that, too, is a problem.

22. Shaking their heads, "If it is this close in MA, November will be a catastrophe for the Dems!"
"In a stunning show of Republican strength, the race in MA was won by a Democrat ONLY BARELY. This is ominous if not a death knell to Dems in other, less liberal bastions. The people are angry and the Dems are out of touch. Massive losses by Dems to follow in every single election in November!"
