!!!!! NEW RULE !!!!!
Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 04:56 PM by Ian David
Whenever you post a poll showing a Democrat losing in the polls to a Republican, you are required to also post a link to someplace you can donate or volunteer to help the Democratic candidate win.

I'll agree to be the first person to submit to this rule.

(R) Brown 52% (D) Coakley 43% - Insider Advantage / Politico
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x132506

Oh, no!

What can we DO!?!?!

Make at least five calls from your own home for Martha Coakley, RIGHT NOW: http://www.my.barackobama.com/coakleyn2n

Donate to Martha Coakley for U.S. Senate RIGHT NOW: https://coakley.zissousecure.com/contribute/PFP/iandavidb

(Yes, I know I have no right to make up rules and such. It's a rhetorical device / hook / homage to Bill Maher).

3. Since I started googling it six years ago...
... there has not been ANY Republican who is more Liberal than even the MOST CONSERVATIVE Democrat.

That includes Snowe, Collins and that guy from Rhode Island whose name escapes me.

Let me say that again, rephrased slightly.

The MOST LIBERAL Republican is still MORE CONSERVATIVE than the LEAST LIBERAL Democrat.

4. But that totally ignores 3rd parties.
I know we aren't supposed to mention that they exist around here, but when the Dem's decide to put a total ass-hat up for election in an area I'm in, I'm not afraid to go 3rd party. That hasn't happened too much for me, but every now and then I know it's worked in other parts of the country.

10. There's Richard Carroll...
...who's a state rep in Arkansas, but I think he's the only one for the Greens that are at the state level.

Mind you, I wasn't making a particular statement on this one particular election in general, but rather a more general statement.

8. There are many times I would be willing to make a protest vote
or a 3rd party vote.

But not now in MA. Too much at stake for the whole country

14. a protest vote is meaningless
when the results are not significant. If you believe in protest votes, this is when you do it. Not when dems will win or loose big, or when the win or loss doesn't matter. I'm not saying you should do a protest vote this week but "now is not the time" kind of takes away the power of a protest vote.

15. Protest votes when everything is at stake are worse than meaningless, they are suicidal.
"This is when you do it" -- sorry, but no.

19. I disagree. You don't screw over a country to voice discontent.
The record setting filibusters of this Senate would become constant and all progress is blocked, even if the progress isn't as fast as we want it otherwise.
What lesson would it teach. "Be more like teabaggers tell you to be." It won't make anyone more progressive for sure.
On a state level it might not do big harm (though he'd be shameful to have as a Senator). On a national level he could do harm, harming me and everyone else.

My protest will be lodged by seeking to primary the Democrat AFTER she wins this one if she is a bad Senator.

A protest vote npw is like blowing up the school building because your teacher was bad.

25. I miss Jim Jeffords. What's sad is that Richard Nixon was in many
ways more liberal than the so-called "moderates" and "centrists" of the current Democratic Party! But as Bill Maher put it, the Democrats have moved right, and the Republicans hve moved into the insane asylym. Therefore, we have to do whatever we can to keep them out of power.

7. I just made the first two calls of the day
One hung up. The second was an elderly gentleman who said the political call he has been receiving have been overwhelming. All hours and he is FED UP with it. He will go vote tomorrow but he is SICK of the calls.

Now I am hesitant to call the rest on my list.

ARGH!

11. I got one call like that.
You make sure you sound concerned and sympathetic, and then reassure him that no matter what, the calls will stop after tomorrow.

Make sure you point out how close the race is, and how we need to make sure we get everyone out to vote.

Especially since some people don't know there's an election tomorrow: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=7498233&mesg_id=7499004

and Scott Brown supporters are jamming the phone banks: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x7484231

and trying to convince Democrats that the election is a day LATER: (I'll get that link to you in a bit)

Typical repugs. Gee, in the old days people went to jail for that. It's called conspiracy to commit election fraud.

17. !!!! NEW RULE COROLLARY NUMBER ONE !!!!
Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 07:52 PM by Ian David
!!!! NEW RULE COROLLARY NUMBER ONE !!!!

When someone ELSE posts something like:

a) A negative poll showing the Democrat losing to the Republican
b) An editorial on how much trouble the Democratic candidate is in
c) An analysis of why the Democratic candidate is doing poorly

... then you must post a link to volunteer or contribute to the Democratic candidate in response to that thread.

We need a NAME for The New Rule.

How about: Don't Whine If You Won't Put In The Time

Coakley will win. The Democratic candidate always wins when there's a large turnout.

The rule that seems to have died and vanished as though it never existed is the one that stated personal posts go in the lounge.

27. On a POLITCAL forum.
I don't come here to read health reports of posters' family members, local weather reports, marriage problems of DUers and the like. I come to DU for politics.

I knew as soon as they first decided to keep the GDP after the 04 election that GD would morph into a sort of lounge. It has. I notice though that some personal posts get moved and some don't. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.
