Notre Dame paper's editor resigns after running gay-bashing cartoon
...King resigned in a letter published in the paper Monday. In the letter, she wrote, “A miscommunication between another editor and myself led to the comic running without me first reading and approving the material. Regardless, no excuse can justify the comic even being considered for publication, and the duty to censor it fell to me. I failed to do so, and am solely responsible for providing a forum for this message of hate.” The offending antigay editorial cartoon called a baseball bat the “quickest way to turn a fruit into a vegetable.”

1. What a disguisting cartoon, and it's such a shame that it went to press like that.

2. Who is the "other editor?" That person must resign, too. It was the most disgusting
offensive "cartoon" I have ever seen in a college newspaper. King was right to resign. But anybody who actually saw the "cartoon" and thought it was fit to publish absolutely HAS to go.

Thank you for the update, Bluebear.

3. What is up with Notre Dame?
I guess there are rotten apples in every barrel. I know a slimeball politician who not only fares from there, but who pulled strings to get a friend's son into Notre Dame even though the kid didn't have the grades to get in on his own.

4. Part of my letter to Prop 8 trial attorneys
However, most people missed the significance of that being published DURING the trial. It is no secret that the Catholics and the Mormons both raised money and spent heavily to get Prop 8 passed.
That the premiere educational institution of the Catholic church could be so blind (or so arrogant) as to think it could print such depravity and disregard for people’s safety in such a naked fashion in the context of the trial, defies belief.

Ideally there is a witness on the backers side of Prop 8 who was educated at Notre Dame whom you can grill over this incident.

(One of the arguments we hear constantly is that by teaching about same-sex relationships, they are endorsing them. By the same token, by printing a “joke” advocating violence against gays lesbians, they were clearly endorsing that violence).

5. "...between another editor and myself..."
"...without me first reading and approving..."

"...no excuse can justify the comic even being considered..."

That's minus three right there, Madam Editor.

6. Did you notice they changed the rules on feedback too?
The Observer now has new rules allowing it to remove the comments left by the public, if they don't like them.
That actually occurred late on friday afternoon after they had 179 mostly negative comments on the quality of the 'apology' from the editorial staff.
One day they might learn something - oh wait it's a university.
