I got a job!
The guy saw my resume, contacted me, negotiated compensation, and hired me right on the phone. I go in to meet with him this Friday.

I was at the end of my rope, then this happens! :bounce: :D

Congrats! I'm hoping 2 of my friends get hired at Boeing when they open their new plant here. One's been out of work for 2 years, the other has a part time job and a wife and 2 kids to feed.

It's a legit company. I looked into the company a little before I responded to their first email. My background just happened to fit exactly what he was looking for. If it's a scam he did a lot of work getting the technical language right for my particular skill set.

scams going on around here. I went through a similar hopefulness. Then the appt got cancelled, he couldn't get back in town in time or some such shit. . . and oh, by the way, I need you to xyz (involving "paying" others on his behalf, plus some for me of course), I'll overnight a check to you... he did the check looked real...called the issuing bank... real checking account but only certain check #s were being allowed through because someone was using it to scam folks. Guess what, the check # on the check I received wasn't on the okay'd list.

This is a legit company. The only thing I've noticed is that the President of the company, who I think is the person I spoke with, has contributed money to Republican campaigns. I'll have to remember to keep politics out of the office, but that's nothing new.

It feels so good to work when you haven't had the opportunity in awhile. I remember reading somewhere that this was once a Democrat value, the idea that anybody should be able to work. That's a good sentiment, unemployment really takes one's dignity away.

53. Not offended in the least.
Your post just struck me as a little out of place. You seemed to be pushing the idea that working is not a Democratic value. Also, not using the proper tense of the word "Democrat" raises suspicions in a lot of us. In the manner you were using it it should be "Democratic", not "Democrat".

Not using the proper tense is a juvenile rhetorical tactic used by some Republicans who can't mount any real arguments. I'm sure in your case it was just an honest mistake, but now you'll know in the future. :hi:

54. Well then, let me correct my wording for your pleasure:
I encountered a historical debate where a Democrat was arguing the right of all individuals to have meaningful work and I liked the argument because I believe meaningful work gives dignity to people. :)

78. Well, it doesn't feel completely normal just yet.
Maybe it's just that I've been living like this for so long it's hard for me to believe, but I won't feel completely normal until the paychecks start coming in and clearing.

Also, I'll need to replenish what's left of my reserves before I can completely relax. That means that I'll probably continue for a while with the part time online work I've been doing. So my days are going to consist of going to work and then coming home to do a couple more hours of work online.

Also, I'm wondering how difficult it's going to be to adjust to a 9 to 5 schedule again. No more late night TV and sleeping in. :boring:

77. These days, you're not getting hired unless you're EXACTLY what an employer wants.
Over the past eight months, my resume had gone through the same company twice. In a seller's job market, I could have gotten either position, but they managed to find someone just a millimeter more qualified. Last month, my recruiter called and said, "This one you've got--this time they're looking for YOU." I interviewed with them the Tuesday after I saw Obama speak in New Jersey and was hired that Thursday.

Congrats, and if you actually LIKE the work, so much the better!

83. I am exactly what he's looking for. I finally lucked out.
My problem has been that, as you say, you have to be exactly what the employer wants. You can have 25+ years experience in software development but, even if you're willing to accept lower than what you're used to for compensation, a kid a few years out of college with 3 years of .net will beat our your 1 year of .net and 25 years of overall experience.

Most jobs I've ever landed I got because of my degree and overall experience with the understanding that I could quickly learn what they needed. That no longer happens. I think that's partly because it's an employer's market but it may also be that non-technical HR people do all of the initial screening anymore and the only thing they know is "n years of X" without any understanding of what X is or that anyone with sufficient IT experience can learn X within a few weeks and then end up outperforming the kid with the 3 years.

175. I recruited for a while
and what you say is partially true...

large corporate recruiting arenas use several recruiting firms that compete with each other to get the deal (the person hired)
What they have on the job description HAS TO BE EXACTLY WHAT IS IN THE RESUME - no exceptions.

I think that is partially because some of the recruiters in-between (because in this type of recruiting there is so much bureaucracy) don't know the skill set so they REQUIRE
EVERYTHING in the job description. Also, by the time the resume gets to the person who is making the decision to hire (usually the client)...the client just wants to sit down
and give the person the work. No training involved.

It's stupid, but that's how it's done.

Is this a smaller company? Or the guy that you will be working for specifically did the hiring? That may be why you were able to get "looked at".

Anyway, good luck to you! :hi:

177. There was no recruiter involved.
I'd been using Dice, Monster, etc. Most of the ads on them are placed by recruiting firms and therefore had all of the problems you mention.

I finally got disgusted with the whole recruiting firm thing, followed some advice I was given, and used Craigslist. (Yes, I know it's full of scams, you just have to be careful).

I actually got in person interviews with real software firms by answering Craigslist ads. That's further than I had gotten in several years with recruiters. Finally I posted my resume in Craigslist's resume section (If you do that, you have to make sure to remove any identifiable information, and use their email anonymization function). At that point I started getting a bunch of idiotic spam (which was okay since they didn't have my real email address or info), plus a few emails from actual managers and even CEOs of small companies. This gentleman was one of them.

105. A lot of times, especially with Nevada state jobs,
Edited on Tue Jan-19-10 05:07 PM by tonysam
they already have somebody picked, but by law they have to open up the job to all applicants.

Every application you apply for with the state of Nevada has screening questions. You have to fit the job EXACTLY before going to the next stage. The feds do this a lot, too, in order to comply with civil service regulations, yet they really aren't complying when there is already somebody in line for the job. So they tailor the "screening" questions to make sure you don't qualify for an interview.

It's a scam to make it look like the job is "open," but it has already been filled.

150. LOL! As I said above, I've learned IT interviews are often done by phone
They don't care too much abour your looks or how you dress. They just want someone whose skills fit what they need. Hence, phone interview is all they need to hire.

Nice to hear some good news for a change!

Now, rub some of that job luck on me! 43 yrs. old, 11 months unemployed, just finished nursing school and am looking for any LPN openings that will accept a new graduate. Everyone wants one year of experience, but how do you get experience when nobody wants to hire you? :banghead:

102. Can you find someone who needs a private nurse?
Check Craigslist. You might be able to find some wealthy disabled or elderly person who needs a personal aid / private nurse. You have to be extremely careful of scams on Craigslist, but there are also some real opportunities there that most people aren't aware of. It's where I found the part time online work I've been doing.

127. A lot of the home healthcare jobs I see
also want one year of experience! I can't really blame them, since you're outside of the facility and really do need to be comfortable on your own, especially if an emergency situation arises. Bayada Nurses has tons of openings for LPN's, but one year of experience is always required.

I've got 8 more resumes ready to go in the mail tomorrow and will keep calling the places where I've already submitted one. I'm hoping that an actual PAPER resume might stand out nowadays, since most people send them via e-mail.

Once I'm employed and have that experience under my belt, I'd love to be a private nurse on one of my days off as a way to make some extra money. That's one of the appealing things about nursing...lots of options once you've got that experience.

161. Maybe this is a dumb suggestion since I don't know the field,
but could you take a job as a nurse's aide while you're looking? You would get some real hospital experience plus, if that hospital needs a new nurse at some point, you're already there and have demonstrated your reliability, work ethic, and ability to work with patients.

185. Not a dumb suggestion at all
I was thinking the same thing...until one of my instructors just happened to mention that if you're an LPN, you can't work as anything other than an LPN. It's illegal to work as a CNA, which doesn't seem right to me. I would think it would be OK to do, since LPN's have more in-depth schooling than CNA's and the employer would be getting "more for their money", but it's not allowed. Maybe it has to do with pay/responsibility, maybe it's an insurance issue, I don't know. I'd be interested in finding out if it's a NJ regulation or if it applies all over the country.

I just have to keep plugging away until I find someone willing to give a new grad a chance! I also have to get the rest of my paperwork together to submit to the state licensing board. I've already registered to take the licensing exam, but can't get a date until I have the state stuff taken care of. I need to find my divorce papers, which will put a BIG smile on my face, and get a 2x2 "passport type" photo to attach to the forms. Then all I need to do is pass the exam, get fingerprinted, get a physical, have another TB test...WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO???

190. Thank you!
That's what I keep trying to tell myself! Just find one place that's willing to give you a chance, all it takes is one person to say YES!

I also want to continue on with school and get my RN. Once you're an RN, you have so many more options. A bachelor's in nursing would come in very handy when I'm too old to be on my feet, running around from patient to patient, for 8 or more hours a day because I'd be able to teach. The way I'm feeling these days, being too old is just around the corner! :)

Thanks for the positive words and once again, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW JOB!!
