A question about Haiti, the gazillion church groups, and women's reproductive rights |
I knew very little about Haiti before the quake, and I only know slightly more now. One of the things that has struck me since the coverage is the number of church groups that have been working in Haiti and how such a large portion of their population is children, IIRC, about 45% children under the age of 18. I have heard reported that many poor Haitians "give" a child--or two--to relatives with a better station in life, which results in virtual slavery for the children. Many of the churches are involved in running orphanages that arrange adoptions to the US.
My question is, how many of these church organizations work to keep birth control & abortion rights away from the women of Haiti? This isn't meant as a rhetorical question, I really don't know what roll the churches have been playing in Haitian politics and I would like to know.

1. I don't believe that I am the only one who has been wondering about this |
~and almost amused that someone would object to the question.

and them catholics love their babies!! I'm being a smart ass here, but it does make me sick that any church or religion would perpetuate such suffering.
