1. Check out "Ecology Of Fear" by Mike Davis - it's a history of LA disasters . . . |
|
And why the world loves to destroy LA in movies, books, comics, TV shows.
There's a chapter called "Our Secret Kansas" which is a history of LA tornadoes over the decades. Fascinating.

2. Not common, but it does happen. |
|
When I lived there (a long time ago), this would happen when a big tropical storm came through. They aren't used to it down there, but it is not the end of the world.

5. It's L.A... WHAT "tropical storms"? |
|
The currents go the wrong way (away from L.A.) for tropical storms and the water is cold not warm - L.A. is like the anti-Miami as far as conditions favorable for a hurricane.

6. For pete's sake. You know nothing about LA, do you? |
|
Every year or so a couple of tropical storms venture that far North, and produce heavy rains, mudslides, etc.

9. Tropical storm "tropical storms" |
|
It is not a frequent occurrence, but they do venture that far north on occasion. San Diego has an even higher risk.
Baja California gets hit by full-on hurricanes every few years, so southern California gets nailed by the remnants of those. I don't ever remember a proper hurricane making it all the way up to San Diego, but I lived through tropical storms.

23. Florida tornadoes are usually 1's or 2's we rarely hit a 3. |
|
When I lived in TN they were bigger and out in the midwest they are truly monsters.
In FL we really have to worry mostly about hurricanes and the embedded tornadoes they bring or the occasional spring tornado.

Areas around the affected area will get hail, but not necessarily tornado. Be thankful you didn't get more.

this is a very SERIOUS storm, or rather series of storms.
Mark my words, the floods are going to be bad, so will be the landslides.

13. Tornadoes happen in Southern California |
|
and in Northern California
and in Philadelphia, PA
and in all kinds of crazy places where you don't expect them!
it does not mean the world is ending.
it does not support whatever crazy hypothesis some people here always seem to think is substantiated by one event.

In Houston, a tornado warning during a winter storm would be known as Tuesday.

After the rains when the sky is clear and you look east from the LA basin or get on the 14 or 138 or up the Grapevine and all the peaks are white.
