The country is about to go... nowhere
Having been crushed in the 2006 and 2008 election there was basically no place to go for the Republican party but up. Well that or away to form a third party. The Republicans had a bold plan. Go nowhere and so they have. The Republicans went filibustering through the roof with a bold choice to act not boldly on anything and everything. Odd given the huge economic crisis facing the country. They aren't ashamed to do nothing about the amazing lack of health insurance, jobs, energy alternatives, continued war... When the do nothing policy basically gave them a political draw in 2009 and they seemed ecstatic. Now the policy would appear to have given them a Senate seat. So I imagine they are about to do nothing like never before.

Maybe the Democrats go bold and liberal and move through reconciliation. Maybe the run scared and centric. Does it really matter? I know where the Republicans are going. I imagine a really smart campaign organizer could use that to a huge advantage in 2010. The Democrats still control both houses and the presidency. That means they control the political conversation... if they want to. Now would be a good time to run out to the floor just about anything that would be embarrassing not to support or more to the point bother to allow a vote on. Try to shame Republicans for their lack of action. You know what they are going to do, make them pay for it. If they can't think of things they should ask Al Franken because apparently he understands how to do this.

Technically I thought this was the plan all along which is why they waited until this year to push economic reforms and regulations.
