Question: How come when Dems have a supermajority, they don't act like it? And when Repubes don't, |

1. Repubs don't give a shit what anyone thinks |
|
They are convinced they are right, and will act like it. The dems are like battered spouses, terrified someone will yell at them or not like them.
Compare Harry Reid to Newt Gingrich. In a mild way, it is like an abusive relationship. One party is terrified, mild and apologetic. The other is rough, self centered, irrational and brutal.

2. "In a mild way?" Oh no, my friend -- it is *absolutely* an abusive relationship! |

3. That's a great analgy. I heard one talking head tonight say he |
|
thought the Dems were so dumbfounded that they got the super majority, they were awestruck and didnt quite know what to do with it! I think there's some truth in that statement, but there's also a lot of truth in the fact that neither party can get a super majority and have ALL LOYALISTS! Some in that group are just not going to ALWAYS go along with the Party Plan!

4. We never had a supermajority because Lieberman's not a Democrat. |
|
Sanders isn't either but at least we could count on his vote.

5. Bush started his term with a 50/50 split in the Senate. |

6. Until Obama's election, filibusters were not the rule. Even Clinton only had to face |
|
them about a fourth of the time.
Everything is different than it was during Bush or Clinton's Presidency, because the opposition party is now willing and able to filibuster (or endlessly amend -- which amounts to the same thing) any bill, no matter how popular with the public.

7. Exactly my point! Dems usually roll over -- Repubes do not |
|
Even though everything they stand for is wrong...

9. And my point is that Rethugs didn't use this tactic in the past the way they are now. |
|
So we'd have had to reason to do it to Bush.

10. Actually, I think it started in earnest with Dole, under Clinton |
|
Hence, only the most pro-corporate stuff could get through....

13. Yes, but we can guess the degree to which the Dems will use it, when the tables are turned |
|
Which is to say, they won't

14. That's because Dems still believe in the concept of government, |
|
and the Rethugs have decided that permanent gridlock is the best way to go.

12. They became the rule in 2007 |

After the dems took over the house and senate filibuster use went up about 400%. And it has stayed there since January 2007.
