A town by town comparison of the MA special election vs 2008 Presidential election
For those curious how Brown vs Coakley compared with McCain vs Obama in 2008, you can compare the totals in these links.

and

----------
Lots of interesting things here. Turnout was relatively good in progressive strongholds such as Cambridge this year at 54% where Coakley won 84% of the vote. But nothing compared with 2008. for example, in the general election in 2008 Obama received 80,000 more votes in Boston than Coakley did this year (almost enough for her to even the election by itself-- she lost by about 100,000 votes)

As might be expected Brown received more total votes than McCain in most towns and Coakley received far less total votes than Obama and in some town less than McCain.

But some shockers: in some small towns that Obama won in 2008, Brown won with more total votes than Obama won. For example, Abington and Bridgewater.

1. Amesbury, the town I lived in for 15 years, went 60% for Obama . . .
and 57% for Brown . . . that certainly says something about the impact of Obama's first year on this election . . .

there it is in black and white, folks . . . can't get much more definitive than that, imo . . .
