I'm reminded of the Wofford victory over Thornburgh in PA
Pennsylvanians tired of Dick Thornburgh's acquired D.C. persona, that he hung around in the Duquesne Club rather than campaigning, and promptly lost to Harris Wofford, a milquetoast, but extraordinarily intelligent former college President who had been appointed to fill Senator Heinz' seat. It was wrongly assumed that b/c Wofford campaigned on Health Care issues way back then (!) and won for THAT reason over a 'popular' former governor and US Attorney General, that the Republicans jumped on the issue, albeit wrongly, and the media of course dutifully followed suit. their mis-reading of the PA voters' message led indirectly to the rise of Clinton and his popularity.

Message should read: Get your ass into gear and campaign. The Mike-Dukakis-go-to-Tanglewood-shunt doesn't work. EVER!

P.S. The Heinz plane crash occured less than a mile from my home. AFAIC it changed the whole of American politics. these things happen...we need to be prepared for the unusual.
