Making Lemonade out of this Lemon |
|
Well its morning. The sun will shine today. Last night sucked. However, as a "glass is half full" kind of guy, there is one positive thing that comes out of last night.
If there was a safe seat in the US Congress, it was Ted Kennedy's seat. And the Democrats lost it less than 6 months after his demise. So the new lesson? There is no such thing as a safe seat. Everything is in play. Come November, none of the 435 House members can put it in cruise control. None of the 33-34 Senators up for re-election can breathe easy.
This is a good thing in the long run. "Safe" politicians become arrogant and insular. They start listening to their various hangers on and sycophants as opposed to the people who put them there.
As progressives, we need to DEMAND that our representatives live up to their ideals, and stop the deal making and watering down of their (and our) ideals. We also need to demand that they listen. Martha Coakley didn't listen. She didn't make it look like she was willing to try. We put them there. We pay them. We give them the perks they enjoy. They need to realize its a privilege to be there, and work hard to earn the right to STAY there.

Most of them think they're "different", "better", "special", ie IMMUNE to the danger of losing their seat. After all, they're doing such a heckuva bang-up job for their constituents, right? Right?? Sure, for their corporate constituents, but they're assuming the little people will fall in line and vote for them anyway.
Ya snooze ya lose, dumbf*cks.
