Is MA still a blue state?
OK, it's no longer a contender for bluest, but I think it is still a blue state. I don't think you'll see people turning against Kerry or Frank or suddenly deciding that they're against marriage equality.

2. The good people of MA are angry with "the status quo" when they voted for CHANGE.
Further, all the hyping of "Teddy's seat" doesn't endear Independents to voting for the Democrat. Briefly, it's not a good time to be an incumbent party - especially since the Obama Administration has mainly served Wall Street and the MIC vice those hurting on Main Street.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for MA to turn red. And your darling little brown smudge is going to have to support all kinds of things- like abortion rights if he wants to be more than a blip on the screen. you'll love him for that, right?

8. MA is pretty blue
but not universally so. Four out of the last five governors have been Republicans, and the state voted twice for Reagan. As for marriage equality, if it had been on a statewide ballot, there's no reason to believe that the results would be any different from what happened in Maine. You see, after I moved to the East Coast almost three years ago, I find a lot of faux Catholics who pay lip service to their men in skirts, but will cuss you out on the New York Thruway as badly as any heathen. I'm sure MA is chock full of people like that.

10. I live here
and I have to say, my facebook feed has been all "Scott Brown in my hero." "I'm so happy that Scott Brown, Mass finally did it!!!!"

A guy drives around in a pickup truck for a while and all of a sudden he is the best guy ever.

30. Same here
I'm so tempted to start pounding on some of my FB friends who think Scott Brown had such great ideas. But I know it will lead to nothing but dropped friendships with people who are otherwise OK except for being politically deluded. Can't repeat enough the simple truth they can't explain to me: "Why send a Republican back to Washington when the Republicans held power for eight years and damn near wrecked this country in every way?"

They already cut off their noses then to spite their faces, is that what you're saying? No one listens to "people." People are passe'.

But "blue" doesn't mean "will vote for anyone with a 'D' next to their name - regardless of circumstances"

19. Only an idiot would vote for a republican (unless the voter is extremely wealthy).
So it just means that there are more idiots in Massachusetts than smart people. It doesn't make the smart people less smart.

24. Here's a clear map of how the voting went:
http://reason.com/blog/2010/01/19/a-strange-strange-sight-mass-i

For those not familiar with MA, the blue areas are a strange mix.

The entire western section of the state (which is rural and not particularly well off) went for Coakley. They didn't vote against their self-interest.

The blue areas around Boston are well-to-do suburbs --- with higher levels of education but who often vote their wallet.

I'm no pundit and can't explain this result at all.

is still pretty high.

29. Therefore, Mass is still a blue state. Can a blue state never have a Rethug elected to it?
No, it can. The blue states will elect Rethugs, they just want their Rethugs more socially liberal.
