Women in labor can have food, studies say

A little refreshment -- and not just ice chips -- appears to be fine for women who are in labor and are at low risk of complications.

A review of five major studies found that there's no risk or benefit associated with eating and drinking during labor for women unlikely to need anesthesia.

Researchers who analyzed the existing studies on the topic for Cochrane Systematic Review concluded that low-risk women should be allowed to eat and drink what they want during labor.

The review of the studies, which looked at 3,130 women, was led by Mandisa Singata of the East London Hospital Complex in South Africa.

1. I can remember even thinking about food during labor.
being able to drink would have been nice.

2. Bleaaah. Who feels like eating right then?
And seeing as how I needed emergency surgery at the last possible instant, who can predict who can eat and who can not?

3. Yeah, right.
I was given ice, juice, jello during labor. It all came up on the way to the delivery room. With all three deliveries, I was given liquids and my husband's job was holding the pan for me on the way to delivery.

Not that I was ever much in the mood until afterward.

5. I was under the impression that women weren't allowed to eat during labor just in case
a c-section was necessary. And you never know. I was nano moments away from a c-section with my second (had one with my first) because my son had the cord around his neck and was in deep distress. Luckily he was delivered in 3 pushes.
