New very high resolution satellite imagery for Haiti, taken on 1/17.. |
In an effort to aid the recovery/relief effort in Haiti, Google has updated Google Maps last night with extremely high resolution imagery (15 centimeters) taken this past Sunday. It provides an even more graphic view of the destruction than their original release from the day of the earthquake. It is only in Maps right now; they hope to add it to Earth by early tomorrow. 1. Oh god that's heart-breaking! |
Look at all the tents, and the dust/smoke!
What a horrible scene.

2. That's great and I hope it helps, but they stopped short of the SW suburbs and Carrefour, |
the places nearest the epicenter.

6. This shows a tanker tied up at the terminal and tank farm in Carrefour |
The tank farm appears to be undamaged. But it is probably a pre-earthquake image?

7. It's definitely pre-quake. You can see the edge of the new photos runs... |
in a curving line from the bay to the mountains, with the stadium just inside the line and the cemetery just outside.

8. I believe that the Carrefour area imagery is from last week.. |
if you put these coordinates into the Maps search box, you'll see destroyed structures: 18.534985,-72.418105 It is, however, not in as good resolution as the newest stuff. The higher res imagery may not have been provided to Google for the wider area.

9. Yeah, you may be right--hard to tell from the low res pictures, but I think I see an oil spill |
check out 18.544927, -72.388124 Also, possible oil blown against shore here: 18.539178,-72.386964
