A WORD ABOUT DONATING

I received this message from a DUer whose wife works at a local food bank. He asked me to pass it along to all of you...

The logistics of organizing local contributions of solid goods are just impossible to manage. Getting those boxes of (for example) cans of food, or boxes of clothing from a locality in the U.S. to Haiti is virtually impossible.

Please, please urge that DUers who want to help donate MONEY rather than food or clothing, or any other material goods, to the various agencies that have set up channels for contribution. Those agencies are best able to provide the aid that's needed in the most efficient and fastest way.

It's much more effective for an aid agency to turn cash into food that's quickly transportable to Haiti than it would be to (again, for example) transport a pallet of cans from Kansas to Haiti.

I truly believe this is an important message. Americans always want to help; but we need to help in the way that helps best.

Please take a moment to donate now. And give this thread a kick and a rec so more DUers can see it.

Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 10:51 AM by FailureToCommunicate
our efforts for Haiti fund raising. We are urging high school groups to form, under the name Hope for Haiti (on Facebook) to organize in their schools for ongoing collections. Many of the High schools groups are choosing to contribute collections to "Partners In Health" because of their long presence in Haiti -20 plus years- providing medical care based on need not income.

"Partners In Health" have also set up a text contribute method:

http://standwithhaiti.org/haiti/news-entry/use-your-cell-phone-to-text-your-donation-to-pih/

However, Hope For Haiti groups are suggesting that kids -and their parents- offer MORE than a one time $10 contribution.
One idea was to suggest that families spend AT LEAST as much as the price of taking the kids to see "AVATAR" - or about $50. (without buttered popcorn?)

Thanks for the list of organizations, and thanks again, Skinner, for DU!

Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 12:10 PM by clear eye
Action Against Hunger often works side by side w/ Doctors w/o Borders. AAH provides safe water, sanitation, sometimes shelter, and food, while DWB handles the medical end. AAH has been in Haiti for 25 years and employs as many Haitians as possible in carrying out its activities. It will remain when the other groups are long gone. It is a top-rated charity w/ Charity Navigator (which is determined by how effectively the group uses its funds) and is even on the InterAction recommended agencies list which can be reached through the ClintonBush Fund FAQ page.

Here is its Donation Page

34. since 911... i JUST CANT do the 911 thing...
when 9-11 occur, a call from the RED CROSS had me earmark $900 from people at my office-----
they had promised it to help SPECIFICALLY those people

a day later they said they had enough money and they would use the money "for other things"
i no longer trust the RED CROSS... what had been my annual donation now goes to

KID/AUTISM RELATED CHARITIES

for Haiti... i cannot give to the Salvation Army because of their views and actions toward ILLEGAL ALIENS

so-------------- what is left----------- DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS..... and they have my check !

41. See my post #28 above.
A couple of days ago a Red Cross spokesperson on MSNBC suggested that people donate to other groups helping out in Haiti. From my research I am particularly impressed w/ the Action Against Hunger group that I linked to above. As they have a permanent presence there helping the most needy, you can be guaranteed that your money will go to help in this situation. They were in motion the second the earthquake ended, having the people they employ from the surrounding areas go to Port au Prince to assess the needs.

Please go to the linked website, read more about it, and be as generous as you can.

35. You can also do what I do.
I posted the following in another thread. I live where radical Fox lies watchers & haters are numerous. I've joined the Human Rights Task Force in my county because the hate is resurfacing, not only with Aryans but the militias too. It's gonna get bad folks. Hang on for a very bumpy ride not only here in N Idaho, but all over the country. Join the SPLC through their web site to aid them in their pursuit to fight this hate that is festering throughout our country. Yea, they come down on me but I stand my ground. I'm also disabled and still get to help out. I agree with Skinner, put your energy in positive efforts. If, like me, you can't walk well or stand for long without pain, do things you can do. Get active in your community and organize against hate, organizations like mine are going to need your help.

49. I did.
I went to work. I had meetings about 6 students in crisis, greeted my 90 students cheerfully and energetically throughout the day, took time to notice everything they were doing right, indulged their desire to spend their break dancing to "YMCA" along with a you-tube video of the village people, and at 5:30 I stepped in to the "homework club" to put my students to work after they told the supervisor that they "didn't have any homework."

I wrote several notes and emails to parents, visited with some former students and caught up with how they are doing, met with a team leader at the Boys & Girls club to help coordinate a joint fundraiser for Haiti, met with a group of teachers working with gifted students to help them implement appropriate service in their classrooms, taught 6 lessons, met with 3 groups for book discussions, created a flier to send home about the up-coming chess tournament, indulged every adolescent who needed some extra, non-academic attention at recess, corrected about 120 papers, and made 5 sets of copies we'll need later in the week.

I got to work at 6:15, and left at 6:20. I had one 30-minute lunch break, which I spent meeting about some of those students in crisis; a working lunch.

I think I accomplished plenty of positive things today.
