Magazine ranks Atlanta as America's gayest city
Gayer than Bloomington, Ind., and Iowa City, Iowa?

Yep. According to The Advocate magazine, Atlanta rates as the nation's gayest city, followed by Burlington, Vt., Iowa City, Bloomington and Madison, Wis. Don't bother looking for San Francisco, New York or Los Angeles -- those supposed gay meccas don't even place in the rankings compiled by the nation's oldest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender publication.

Though their research was admittedly unscientific, it's not without merit. Correspondent Mike Albo awarded points based on same-sex households per capita, statewide marriage equality, gay elected officials, gay dating and "hookup" profiles per single male population, gay bars per capita, cruising spots per capita, and gay films in Netflix favorites.

1. When I lived in Atlanta, Backstreet Atlanta was the hot bar in town.
What an incredibly fun place to go party! Now it's gone, torn down to make room for condos or something.

They can take the building away, but the memories of thousands of patrons will live on forever!

5. Backstreet... (shudder)
The first time I visited Atlanta I asked ahead of time on one of Compuserve's travel forums (I'm dating myself here, I know) if anyone could recommend a place where I could see some live local rock music while I was in town. Some joker told me to go to Backstreet. The sad thing is, despite the lack of rock music which should have been obvious the moment I walked in the door, it took me two beers to figure out that I'd been had. Oh, and I moved here to Atlanta anyway.

That having been said, this is a VERY gay town. The area around Piedmont Park is about as gay of a neighborhood you'll ever find outside of the Castro in SF.

3. When they say "gayest" they don't mean like "this shit is so gay".
They mean "gay" as in "homosexual", right?

Atlanta?

Really?

4. No Miami, Coconut Grove or Key West
Come on now. I have seen more gays in those areas than anywhere else in the U.S. And I lived there just about 1/2 of my life.

8. Iowa City........
I was in a band while in College and I always liked playing bars in Iowa City. The University of Iowa has the Iowa Writers Workshop and a pretty decent Theatre Department. It's as good a college town as they come.

11. My favorite gay person (heck, favorite person) is there
oddly, she can't wait to get out of "repressive" GA and get back (we fervently hope) out here to the Bay.
